How do you perceive mainstream brands? i.e which in your eyes's is "better" than the next.

The factor's governing this are your choice i.e. Sportiness, reliability, design, capability, price, safety, fuel economy... etc

Here are my top 10 choices in order of preference:

1. Lexus
2. Honda
3. Toyota
4. Ford
5. Vauxhall
6. Infiniti
7. Hyundai
8. Volvo
9. Mercedes
10. Jeep

Go ahead and list your top 10, in order of preference

Why have you Lexus at no 1 if your criteria are Sportiness, reliability, design, capability, price, safety, fuel economy?

I think thats like trying to rank lamp posts.

The choice between all of them is for the most part subjective.

Of those listed:
1. Mercedes
2. Volvo
3. Jeep
4. Lexus
5. Honda
6. Ford
7. Infiniti
8. Toyota
9. Hyundai
10. Vauxhall

What an odd list for "mainstream" though. Unless Infiniti have exploded in the UK since I left, they seem even less mainstream than Ferraris to me. I've seen more Teslas too...

And the VAG group or the French manufacturers must be very sidestream according to OP

I wouldn't describe Lexus, Infiniti or even Jeep as 'mainstream'.

Considering their sales figures why are BMW considered a mainstream brand?

I'm inclined to agree.

It's an odd combination, as each manufacturer has their own strengths.. and it could well get to the stage that the brand at the top simply does them all reasonably well, but you end up with something pretty boring all together...

But I'd rather have my Citroen C6 or one of my old Alfas over something 'average' any day.

I would categorise BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Lexus & Infiniti as premium brands rather than mainstream brands.

Honda would be the best of the rest in my view. I have never been less than impressed by any Honda I have ever driven or ridden in. Superb cars.

Agreed, you genuinely can't beat that feeling of driving a car with that premium BMW badge, no other manufacturer comes close IMO, that's why I'm on my 4th.

I could only find a list from 2009, so may have changed a bit. but here are the top 10 manufacturers in uk sales.

1 Ford
2 Vauxhall
3 Volkswagen
4 Peugeot
5 BMW
6 Toyota
7 Audi
8 Renault
9 Honda
10 Citroen

I would rate them as such...

1. Renault (I like the renaultsport models, and the twizy)
2. Citroen (I like the DS3)
3. Peugeot (I like the RCZ, and the 208 is growing on me)
4. Toyota (GT86)
5. Ford/Vauxhall (not german, have performance models that I can appreciate, even if I don't want one)
6. Honda (not german, pretty boring though)
7. VW/BMW (just meh)
8. Audi (a lot of people I grew up with aspire to have one on the drive, I don't want that at all)

So basically I like French cars and don't particularly like German cars.

Also depends what country you live in. Look at the European brands which you find in the USA which are considered premium there, and just ordinary over here.

Or in China where Citroen is being considered an up-market, luxury brand.

For many it seems like there's an element of "noone got fired for buying IBM" about the brands they buy. Herd mentality and brand perception rather than actual person experience and research.

And this is based upon your extensive knowledge? You have a Volvo in your line up for goodness sakes…

Calling BMW a premium brand isn't what I thought was odd, this was:

Paints a very strange picture in my head.
