can anyone recommend a tried and trusted, honest architect that actually has a vision not just slaps a fugly flat roof rectangular extension on the side of the house and at the same time can realistically estimate rough order of magnitude costs of the project rather than tell me anything I want to hear just to get me on their books?

Don't know about 'vision' as that will depend on what you're angling for. But in terms of easy to work with and will listen, I used Arka Architects in Falkirk. Run by Adam Toleman, I've dealt with him and the rest of his crew a few times. No problems recommending them (if you phone them, say Rick Haynes of High Camilty suggested them).
