Some advice please?

I am looking to import a car from the Netherlands back into the UK. It was originally registered in the UK up until 1994. What is involved in terms of paperwork and cost implications? I suspect the government will be looking to get a piece of the action in terms of import duty or some such nonsense.

Sorry to be the bearer of good news, but if it was previosuly registered in the UK, then the process is quite easy actually. Bring it back in, MOT it, Insure it and Tax it!

...Yep, I thought it would be harder as well, but turns out, I just got it insured on the VIN number, booked it in for an MOT, popped into my local DVLA office (Dont know if this made the process easier) left with the required paperwork to get the orignal plates put back onto the car, job, jobbed.

Cars exported outside EU are subject to a different process I believe.

Which company did this for you? I wanted to do this about 10 years ago but couldn't find anyone willing to insure on a VIN number only.

Does it have an export marker on the DVLA database (when checking with last registration used in UK)

You won't be liable for any duty as if first registered in the UK duty was paid then (it's not refunded when it's exported)
