Driving back from The Opera House on Bournmouth back in the late 90's a mate deciced to drive back to Winchester, this after he's had the best part of of 5 (good) pils and was tripping out fear and loathing style but with enough misplaced confidence to assure ous of a safe drive home. Not being exactly firing on all cylinders I thought he might have a point and an 80 mile walk didnt seem appealing.

We just missed the turn off onto the M3 to which he deciced the best course of action was to swerve over the chevrons to find a v shaped ARMCO coming towards us at 80+ MPH. Some how and I I'm still pretty sure we missed it by inces but we just about made it.

Most of the rest of the journy was spent in silence quietly complating a seconds difference would of ended up with a closed casket funeral for the both of us.

The other care load of nutters managed to spend 5 minutes trapped by a falled tree which after 5 minutes became clear it was another hallucincation.

Shocking looking back.

Anyone else been daft enough to get in a car with some one who was rocking out to a sound track with the stereo off and nearly ended up in a nasty situation?

About 20 years ago I flew to Naples for the first time to work with Fabio Buzzi (of offshore powerboat fame) at his factory near Lake Como. I was met at the airport by one of his professional raceboat drivers, Luca, who drove me across Northern Italy to the factory in an Integrale Evo. I will never forget that journey, one of the most terrifying and yet exhilarating car rides I have ever had.

I might need a couple of valium too, last time she drove she managed a full 360 on a roundabout, this is in an MX5. I did mention with real wheel drive you want to point then boot not turn + boot. Was in the wet to be fair but still.

Still wondering if I should insure her in my next upgrade, would love to see the look on her face when she takes a Lotus Esprit S4 / GT3 out on the road. Not sure if the no claims bonus will be worth it though...

Taxi ride back to the airport in Italy. An overload minibus, driven beyond enthusiastically over the alps in a blazing snow storm with scant regard for any other road users.

Taxi in Shanghai. Never been so terrified. Lane discipline, speed limits, following distances, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings all seemed to be alien concepts.

I was a shaking wreck in need of a drink afterwards - my non driving colleague didn't know what the fuss was about!

It's a toss up for me, either the daily taxi (hired bloke with a Renault) through Bucharest or the taxi from Warsaw to Lodz.
Both made sure of regular movements.

Taxi ride from Holguin Airport to the Paradisus Rio De Oro hotel in Cuba. Barreling along severely rutted roads in complete darkness in a Peugoet 306 with no lights or seat belts for nearly an hour. God, it was awful.

Taxi in Chongqing was much worse than Shanghai for me. Mentalists.

It was one out of about 20 journeys that was particularly bad, not that any of them were great!

Being driven from Guangzhou to Shenzen... I've never said to myself "now it's over" so many times per minute.

Another one was with a 430 Scuderia from the Mugello circuit to the Futa pass, but it went too quick to understand what was happening

Oh! Being driven from the Sheraton Shanghai to the airport by a driver who was visibly falling asleep at the wheel was great too!

Been all over China and never really seen any issue with the driving? Guangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Wuxi etc.

Sure it's not systematic but it's not that bad confused

2 come to mind right now.

1. My mother! I flew to Germany to visit her, she picked me up from the airport then set about trying to make the Mondeo go faster than I had just been in one of Boeings finest. She was in full on race driver mode and either throttle was jammed wide open or the ABS was being activated. I remember closing on a shabby looking van in the outside lane full of tired looking workers, looked at the speedo which was showing around 140mph, looked at the van and braced for impact. Somehow we missed it, it swerved at the last moment and squeezed into a gap in the traffic. I think I blacked out because it was such a blur but I do remember my (normally very placid) mother swearing at them as we went past on another attempt at the sound barrier.

2. RAF ski trip. Living in a forces town with a lot of family in the forces I had the chance to go skiing with local RAF ski club. That sounded great, driven to the slopes, have fun, come home. The transport was a very old plain white bus. This bus had 2 speeds, 40mph and dead stop, nothing in-between. That would normally be great but not whilst driving on very snowy roads, often worryingly sideways with a driver who had a massive grin and was having the time of his life. The skiing seemed very dull, but safe, in comparison.

First day with my exige last year, took it around to my mates (much better driver than me, racer etc) and he asks for a go. Sadly I have drove all of his cars so had to say yes and then was drove the fastest ever around the local industrial estate I closed my eyes..... I'm yet even on track to drive it to that level.

Offered a mate a go in my 1 series coupe.

5 minutes later, narrow, bumpy road, 145mph - idiot.

Various cab rides in Vietnam and Cambodia had a fair few bottom clenching moments.
The drive upto Les Arc in France in a blizzard, getting over taken by buses, seeing various cars upside down on the way up the mountain. That wasn't fan.

Any ski transfer from airport to resort in a minibus driven by an 18 year old!

or the night-time trip across a Scottish moor in 2-3 foot of snow on road tyres (but then I was the driver & it was a RR smile)
