Wide converters

This question is just for interest. I'm not planning on buying a wide-angle converter.

You can buy wide angle converters - the opposite of a teleconverter. Usually they are for compact cameras although they are less common now that you can buy compact cameras with semi-wide lenses.

So the question is: if you put on a wide converter, do you gain f/stops like you lose them with a TC?

It's a nice idea but the aperture is limited by the lens you put it on.

ETA you get a one stop gain for a lens widening factor of 0.74.

That was worth a bit of research...

'The Nikon G to M4/3 Speed Booster from Metabones allows a full frame Nikon G lens to be mounted to a Micro Four Thirds mount camera and in doing so, increases the angle of view and increases the maximum aperture one f/stop.'

So not the same thing, because you're fitting a different lens. It's really an adaptor.

It seems to me you proposed a gadget that will fit a bigger lens onto a smaller camera. Not a 'wide converter' as proposed by the OP, ie something that fits on the front.
