Hi all,

Wonder if anyone can help.

Bought a 1998 Clio ii for £650 last year and it's been great, cheap and cheerful motoring for the Mrs. costing very little to run and being a generally a great first car for her.

Since buying the key fob central locking has never worked despite fiddling about with it. This hasn't been too much of a problem as there's an internal button to engage the locking, plus, being a phase 1 Clio ii there's a key entry on both sides (not just the passenger side as on later models).

Driving back to Leeds from Alton Towers last week we stopped in Chesterfield only to find that I couldn't get out of the driver's door as the central locking had decided it wasn't going to release the driver's door. In addition the rear passenger door and boot are both permanently unlocked and can't be locked (obviously a problem).

Today I had a little root around. The relay switch still appears to be working (both front and rear passenger side doors still lock and unlock by the central locking switch) and you can hear it clicking away. I ripped the door trim off on the rear driver's side door and couldn't get it to release. There seems to be some moisture ingress (possibly through window?).

Does anyone have any ideas? With it being a cheap banger I'm reluctant to spend anything on it, but I'm out of my depth when it comes to electrics. Failing cheap fixes, does anybody have an auto-electrician in Leeds area that they can recommend?

Any help would be appreciated as the MOT is fast advancing and random locking issue aside she's a cracking little motor with 54k on the clock.

The central locking problem can be dampness getting into the sensor which is somewhere behind the headlining near the rear view mirror, does it have a sunroof as they are prone to leaking. With the boot not locking if you can hear the solenoid actuating it'll be the lock itself broken, there's a plastic actuating pin that shears off and jams it up or just stops it locking altogether. You may get away with taking the lock out and removing the offending bit or if it completely breaks you'll need a new mechanism which is around £50 from Renaults. Sorry but can't help with the rear door as mine is a 2 door so never had that problem.
