Subaru Outback vs forrester?
Discussion
Hi all,
So I'm in Oz, and want to trade my commodore for either an outback or a forrester. But which one?
I need to be able to get away for weekends to get to hiking trails, fit a couple of kayaks on the roof rack, or bikes + hiking/camping equipment. Doesn't need to be pretty, needs to be cheap and reliable, and hose downable - I'm thinking AUS$5-6k,
This will also be a daily runaround. I'm thinking outback as its a bit bigger.
Obviously I will be buying a Nissan patrol/Toyota landcruiser as a second weekend expedition vehicle.
But which is the more capable, reliable, vehicle of the two?
Thanks from down under

Both equally reliable really, Outback has more interior space (back seats and boot) due to longer wheelbase, while Forester has better approach/departure angles.
IIRC only the manual versions of both have dual range 4wd, but thats fine because the manuals are better anyway.

If you're regularly going on dirt roads and bumpy bits, I'd go for the Forester, otherwise just get the best of either in your budget at the time you go looking. Forester will probably be a couple of years younger for the same money - should be able to get a decent facelift (2003-onwards with 2.5-litre engine).
A bit of harder looking might get a high-km Gen4 Outback.

Correct, except I think for the turbo versions - Forester GT/XT.GravelBen said:

Correct again - the Subaru auto ain't the most advanced of its time.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
