Hi All

Im trying to get my planned 200 mile group driving day onto a satnav or smartphone, but keep coming up against barriers everywhere! I need 5 x devices the same, but feel buying 5 satnavs with the capability of working with tyre will be silly money, and could be a waste considering how smartphone apps are coming along.

So, i purchased a smartphone on PAYG for a test. I felt this would be much better than standalone nav as we can use for other things. The problem im having is this:

All apps, free or paid, dont seem to have any way of planning the trip on a PC then transferring to phone app. I could plan this via various sat nav apps, but planning sucha long trip on a phone with loads of waypoints aint gonna happen! Way too fiddly.

If i use tyre, it only seems to work with olde sat navs as most new ones dont support it. Those that might are lots of £££ and when buying 5+, its not cost effective.

Tyre doesn't seem to work with any smartphone apps either. I think tyre is ace, but cant seem to find a way to make it work with a smartphone/app combo.

As clients will be using this, the phone app will only be a GPS one, not one that uses data, so googlemaps is out.

If i buy copilot, which seems to be good, ill need 5 x licences at £34.99 each, which becomes equal to buying some satnavs so seems pointless!

I think the smartphone route is ideal, BUT, without finding an app that supports PC route planning, or that works well with TYRE, im at a dead end!?

Can anyone advise/help? I have one week to resolve this and getting frustrated!!

Cheers, mark

I use Tyre and love it. Works great with an older Garmin.

Wouldn't the cheapest solution be to buy x5 older satnavs on ebay? Like most tech, the old stuff is worth buttons.

Easiest way to plan a route like that is to break it down into small steps - plan your route, then find a bunch of towns/junctions to go through on the way. Add that into any sat-nav and you should get the same route, the biggest ballache is having to enter all those destinations...

You need an older model which can do itinerary planning. I've just bought another tomtom go 520 to replace another second hand one which started to go south.

Hmmm, I can see this annoying me when my current satnav dies..

What a ballache that the newer ones cannot work with itinerary files - why would this be?

Christ knows! Its such a great tool to use.

I'm a little miffed as to why tyre dont have a list of devices that work with it. Seems bizarre. Thats all i need really as once i know i can search ebay for 5 used ones!

It's not Tyre per se you need to worry about. There are other similar tools like ITNConverter which will create route files in a variety of different formats. Old Tomtoms read itn which Tyre will do.
