Where to get a d70
Discussion
I'm going to wait till the new year, find a good price online then try to get Jessops to price match it. If they wont price match it all the way, I'll see if they will chuck in a bigger CF card, tripod, or something else.
If not, I'll buy from one of the many online retailers such as Park cameras, pixmania, etc etc.

I got my D70 from here -> www.internetcamerasdirect.co.uk
However I paid - well "Er In Doors" over £900 just 2 months ago for this - Nikon D70 digital camera including AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED lens
Remember, it wont stop there. Like simpo and me you will want other lenses and an SB-800 flash, extra CF cards, a spare battery and at least a Circular Polorising Filter.
It never ends

Places to look:
I really rate these guys: www.bestcameras.co.uk/shop/acatalog/Nikon_Digital_DLR_cameras.html
Myself and many friends have successfully bought from here - great service, and they tend to have very good prices. D70 + 18-70 - £769.99
Also look at www.warehouseexpress.com - D70 + 1870 - £749
You could always try Jessops too - www.jessops.co.uk - they have the kit at £849, but you could get them to pricematch bestcameras as they have a real shop too... ask for the manager when you go in. The benefit of Jessops is you have somewhere to take it back, heaven forbid, and also if you sign up for their card you could get 9 month interest free !!!
However, as others have suggested you will need a decent memory card, I recommend 1Gb from www.valuemedia.co.uk (go Sandisk, pref. Ultra II).
In addition to that, the only other MUST HAVE accessory is a decent flashgun, and some of the above will bundle these, recommend buying a Nikon one.

But that totally depends on what you shoot surely? I can count on one hand the number of times I've used the 10D's flash...and that's since April 2003.

I'd agree - the kit you need depends on what you want to do. I've had SLRs since 1980 and have only just had the need for a powerful flashgun.
So, for starters, I would suggest:
D70 + 18-70mm lens (NOT the 28-80)
67mm UV filter to protect front of lens
1Gb CF card from decent maker - eg Lexar or Sandisk
Spare battery (can be generic, saves £s)
That's it. Then see how you go and maybe that's all you need. Maybe not. If you reach the limits of what you can do with it and want to do more - then the next bit will be clear. It might be a telephoto, a super wide-angle, a close-up lens, a big flashgun,a tripod - who knows?!
Bee_Jay said:Jessops won't just price match retail fronts - they will price match any UK-based, UK-spec and in-stock price, retail or otherwise. And yes, this includes purely Internet stores. I got them to knock £400 quid off the cost of a lens - they matched Warehouse Express. Find the best price you can online, take it to your local Jessops and just ask. Then you get the peace of mind of a reliable shop front to complain to should things go sour.

Fair comment and you are right, however if you take any photos using the internal flash and then try the external flash, you will never look back...

'tis true, and if like I did yesterday someone tests a Speedlight 600 wirelessly when I was looking straight into it, you'll never look back, forwards or any direction again!

Now known as "ThatPhilBrettGuy-YouKnowTheOneWhoWalksIntoThingsBecauseHeHasOrangeDotsWhereverHeLooks"
Don't you hate it when that happens?I was generally looking at the Speedlight with Robin (the D70 owner) going :-
'You know, I just can't this to work. I press the shutter and...'
You can guess the rest. The D70 seems nicely made. Can't say that about the lense it came with though. The nicest way to describe the feel of it is 'budget'.

I am now the proud owner of a d70 with an 18-70 lens. Jessops price matched at £740 so Im happy enough. Been playing for the last hour and the camera is way better than I am a photographer but I cant wait to catch up. Already taken some great shots of my little boy. Thanks to all you guys for some great advice (as usual).

Nice one Nizza, Christmas has come early! Try to get through the manual - it may take a few sessions - but will save a lot of guesswork and possibly frustration later. Enjoy
