Has anyone else seen it? Was in an ad break during Homeland last night. Very cheesy faux James Bond theme to the advert, and whilst I am sure they have their fans, the watches look like cheap Rolex knock-offs. Sorry if that offends!

It was indeed a festival of cheese. Didn't reflect well on the brand.

Maybe this is the correct place to ask, maybe not...

Why do Rolex also make seemingly cheap Rolex copies under a different brand name?

I think the thing that made me think it was a 'rip off' brand is the ad had a whiff of when Chinese brands try to 'do' Western culture. The whole thing looked a bit crass and crappy.

The founder of Rolex wanted to offer a more affordable watch, with the same reliability as a Rolex. Tudor started in 1946, so it's not exactly a new thing.

Do people really think the modern Tudor line looks anything like the modern Rolex line???

I have handled a good few pieces of each and the Tudor quality is excellent (if not quite up to Rolex standards) and certainly a lot better than some other, premium brands.

I can understand not liking them but I can't understand how someone could think a Black Bay (for example) looks like a Submariner or a Heritage Chrono like a Daytona. They are the equivalents of each other in the ranges, if that makes sense.

However, I haven't seen the advert and they may have been presenting different pieces...

well maybe in appearance that's the point, the ones I've seen look like they are very much trying to appear like a premium in style. That when combined with the awful name (it sounds like a chinese copy firm again!)... it may be well-built but i am sure i'd get asked if it was a lanzarote looky looky man special on a regular basis.

Certainly to me they do and all the other Rolex homages of which there are many. Maybe the subtleties are lost on me because I'm not a diver and I'm not into Rolexes but as someone who is generally into watches yes, they are Rolex look-a-likes.

Been my daily wearer for two years - never been asked if it's a fake.

TBH, comments have been positive or inquisitive.

I saw the very same advert, though the Mrs took the ad break as an opportunity to chat about something so I didn't really catch it properly.

Was astonished that she waited until the break, TBH. biglaugh

I've handled a few different Tudors now, I have my preferences though there wasn't really a dud one amongst them.

The similarities stop at them both being watches worn on the wrist to me, in fact I would have thought that Rolex and Tudor would try to keep the look of each brand separate in order to create stronger individual brand identities smile

Wut? The opening post on the "His and Hers" thread is a pair of Rolexes until you look closely:

They're both older discontinued models, the current range of each brand bare little resemblance to each other however, IMO of course.

Thinking about it a bit more, perhaps the differences (IMO!) are not only down to just building individual brands but also to put a style gap between the two so that Tudor doesn't suffer the same fate that happened in the past. Tudor's previous UK market dried up when people started thinking of them as a poor man's Rolex / cheap Rolex knock-off, they clearly wouldn't want that to happen again which may also be why there's no association between the two in any of Tudor's advertising. They'd be looking for Tudor to stand on its own two feet as an entirely separate brand altogether.

Old ones WERE Rolexes with bought in movements. New ones bear no more resemblence (and probably less) than say Omega to Rolex (Seamaster to Sub and Speedmaster to Daytona).
