So I am primarily a mountain biker but also ride on road currently I have 4 bikes:-
Downhill bike sold as "Free Ride" but isn't its definitely a DH bike with 7" travel at both ends & weighs as much as a house,
Ti hard tail with 5" fork for general trail centre stuff,
Carbon hard tail with a 4" fork for XC stuff
Mud guarded Ribble Audax aluminium for all round road riding.
I have started to think an Enduro / AM style modern 5" travel 650b MTB would make a good addition and would a nice light carbon summer road bike, then I started thinking a single speed would be good for fitness as well. Seven potential bikes seems excessive?
How many is the average owned on here - what do people "manage" with?

Winter ali road bike with guards
Carbon summer road bike
26" trail bike
Fixed CX bike
Tandem
Gravel / adventure tourer (42mm tyres, drop bars)
Cargo trike
BMX
Current shopping list
Carbon 29er
650B enduro bike
Fat bike
One from the shopping list will be added soon. The FG CX bike isn't getting much use, so will probably let go of it to make space.

Old to New;
Dual suspension MTB - Univega DS800. (1995 URT design, barely fit for cross country)
Hybrid 700c commuter - Dawes Discovery 401. Front shocks, Discs, weighs a ton (15.5kg!)
Roadie Hack - FORT Aero frame with a bunch of Shimano 8spd rubbish (just under 10kg)
Road Best. - Merckx Carbon Roadie, 10sp Campy. 8kg ish.

Currently 3, but reckon 5 maybe pushing 6.
Commuter - Road bike - mudguards and winter warrior (currently my do it all Ridley Orion with sks chromoplastics chucked on for winter)
Hardtail - Boardman HT Pro 26" 100mm travel for my XC stuff
Time Trial - Dolan TT - self explanatory TT in the summer, Turbo work in the winter.
Want
Pub Bike (no quick release single speed type job but anything will do) - something that I can ride to the shops won't attract much attention and nobody will want to steal
Cyclocross - For some winter racing fun
Posh Summer Road Bike - Something full carbon, frame wheels, etc, no lights, no saddle bag, couple of bottle holders and an outfront garmin mount, want to get a Di2 equipped bike for this role in the sales!

Vintage race bike.
Modern road bike.
Vintage road bike with mudguards.
Old rigid mountain bike, slicks, mudguards and panniers, for touring on.
XC race bike.
CX race bike.
Rigid 29er single speed.
Ye olde 20" wheel trials bike.
Fixed wheel.
A not used vintage CX bike.
Waiting in the wings,
Another vintage race bike, a work in progress.
A 700c disc braked touring bike, also a work in progress.
Waiting to sell,
Time trial bike.
Another fixed wheel.
Spare wheels for the XC, the CX, the single speed, as these are raced.
Spare wheels for the vintage race bike, just because.
Mammoth pile of bits.
Our Lasses XC, which is really my spare.
The keen youth's CX and XC bikes.
The not-so-keen youth's CX bike.
A rubber mountain.
The car does not live in the garage...

1. Vintage Raleigh 753 ex Team bike from 1985.
2. Scott Foil, well used, never abused....workhorse.
3. Condor Super Acciaio, very special.
4. Planet X Team Aluminium winter hack.
5. CAAD X cross bike.
6. Scott Plasma TT.
7. Scott Scale carbon hardtail MTB.
8. Canyon Nerve CF.
9. Giant Anthem X...very tired.
They all get used, Retro Raleigh the least & the Foil & Nerve the most but when the sun is shining I use the Condor as it's the best bike I've ridden. CAAD X, Plasma & Scale get used for racing duties when the mood takes me & the Anthem X is very tired but gets used through winter for night MTB rides. I've got all my bases covered I reckon & I doubt I'll buy another road bike again, I'll just keep having the Condor re painted if it starts to look rough & keep it for years.

I could easily go beyond the current
1 29er hard tail
2 Old 26 inch aluminium hard tail
And get
3 90's steel rigid
4 Recent aluminium hardtail (with dics)
5 27.5 er
Yes, 5, that would do.
A chap I know has over 80 bikes in his collection from some very rare vintage steelies, to modern carbon - and just about everything in-between, 98% are roadies.
I took his claim with a bit of a pinch of salt until I popped over for a cuppa tea a few months ago and he showed me the collection, which is kept in 3 double garages!
