I really hate 105 shifters

Got an issue with my RH ST-5700 shifter, this one was only replaced a month or so ago. The main lever support (tiny little bit of plastic with a notch in it) has decided to start floating free. Second time I've had this issue and doesn't seem to have been caused by an impact

Anyone experienced this before? I suppose I could glue it down, but not sure if that'll then break the lever

I would use this as a justification to buy Ultegra, but I don't want to spend out more money on shifters that probably have the same crappy design.

Time to look at diagrams of Campag shifters...

Campy shifters are lovely. There is a separate button by your thumb to release the mech and a lever inside the brake to upshift.

I personally prefer "ultra-shift" to "Power-shift". The difference is being able to release multiple gears down the mech instead of one at a time.

Two of my bikes has ST-5700 and it's never given me any problems

Can't you return the shifter for replacement if it's faulty? Never had any problem over 8k + miles on a couple of sets of them.

I do like the feel of Campag shifters but Shimano stuff just works so well and the group sets are cheap as chips.

Yep, Shimano shifters look such a mess as well compared to Campag.

I have to say I really do like my Campy groupset on my Colnago, such a nice mechanical feel to it.

10000+miles on my 105 equipped Defy including a collision with an opening car door when the offside shifter took the brunt.

Never got on with Campag, the downshift for me is in the wrong place, good feel but I think they are over-rated. 105 is generally pretty good, it took plenty of abuse on my old winter bike and as far as I know it is still working ok. I'd be looking at s/h stuff on eBay myself, if it is new do you not have any warranty? Otherwise places like Merlin sometimes come up trumps http://www.merlincycles.com/road-bike-gear-levers-...

I've had those shifters on my winter/commute bike for 4/5 years and never had any issues despite a few crashes. They seem totally bulletproof to me.

Are you sure you don't shift funny?

My son has 105 shifters on his winter bike (Genesis Team Volare) and he has never had any problems at all. We fitted them, set them up and they work fine andd always have done. He actually says they work just as well as his Dura Ace 9000 shifters on his S-Works Tarmac.

Agree with that, I have 105 on my commuter and cross bike, Ultegra on my training bike and Dura Ace on the race bike. I find them all to be pretty similar, I'd say the 105 shifters feel smoother with the Dura Ace being a bit more positive when changing but that could be down to set up.

Sorry to thread hijack, but is there a way of tightening up the lateral movement. I have a bit of an issue in that when I brake I also pivot the leavers inwards, which means I'm in danger of shifting and braking at the same time.

Nope, you're stuck with that. Try SRAM if it bugs you.

Would it help to rotate the whole shifter on the bar?

My 105s have done about 2k and haven't put a foot wrong.
