A while back there was a thread on PH pitting the Integrale against the Quattro with both sides having strong feelings for their preference.
I have always had a fancy for an Integrale but I also have a fondness for the Impreza both cars having excited me in their rallying days.
I've just about sold my old rally/hillclimb car and have my Chimaera up for sale. I keep thinking this could be the time to scratch that itch, so an early Integrale at £6000 - £8000 (there is one on the bay at the minute I like the sound of in Northampton) or an Impreza: Classic at £2000, or more expensive Blob or Hawk eye car up to the same budget as the Integrale?
It could be Lancias dodgy electrics and expensive, complicated repairs against Subaru renowned reliability or could also be which retains the purchase price best and doesn't depreciate.
Lets throw this over onto the discussion table.....

Integrale.

Much more exclusive.

You probably see 1 Integrale for 50 Imprezas.

Integrale has much better steering feel and is altogether a much better drivers car. Plus the steering wheel is on the correct side. biggrin

Still given the choice you could buy a much better Impreza for the same money.

You say that about exclusivity but there are special edition rare Subarus that are also quite exclusive. And the subaru is a much better looking beast imo.

Hmm, tricky one this... Not the choice of car, but the choice of car v budget

With Intergrale prices for nice cars now North (and a long way north in some cases) of 20k, I'm not sure I'd touch one from 'the bay' at 8k... Not unless I had a big contingency fund to hand anyway.

As a straight choice between Intergrale and Impreza though, it would be Intergrale every time assuming I could afford a good one

This is a good call, but an Impreza P1 is hard to dismiss. It's probably the quickest real world car from A-B.

I can assure you it isnt - even limiting yourself to imprezas there are many models quicker than a p1. Then there's evo's, skylines and so on to think about.

If you want to drive it i'd say go impreza (preferably an early sti ra because thats what real men drive)- I simply cant see an 8k integrale being anything but a restoration project whereas itll get you an awful lot of impreza.

If you get an Impreza it has to be a RB5, P1 or an STI 5 3 door with the biggest spoiler that suits. I'd also consider a r33 GTR (or 32?), an evo or even a Pulsar GTiR too!

Edited to add you could probably get multiples of some of the above for £8k!

I admire the Scooby, I want the Lancia, I would settle for either if someone is offering.

Really? The Subaru is a bland 90's Jap salon car. The integrale looks like a small itailian muscle car.

EFA.

Personal taste as to which of those things people prefer of course.

P1 is still a car that Evo waffles on about being the perfect car for UK roads. £8k gets you a pretty damn good one too!

Surely any classic on the right suspension will be damn near the same as a P1 in terms of B-road munching ability?

Of course it is all personal taste, but you do know what an integrale looks like right? Bland?

Integrale if you're not going to use it much; Impreza if you are.

Na! I used my integrale every day for three years with no trouble what so ever, it was fantastic. I only sold it to finance a Stratos replica.

Been thinking about this overnight.
And I think nail head firmly hit with your quote.

I've always wanted (well not always as I'm 61 and in my youth wanted a Sunbeam Alpine or a mini but you get the drift) an Integrale, but I want to use it and I'm not sure it would stand up to regular use like an Impreza might. But if I got an Impreza (and it would be less expensive than the Integrale to buy if not to run, then regular use is a possibility.

But would I always say "wish I'd got the Integrale........"

As for the comments above about looks, yes the Impreza looks like a 90's Jap saloon and to most people (wife included) the Integrale just looks like an old Golf..

And I need to sell the TVR to buy the Lancia

(Only other car itches to scratch are an Alpine GTA and a 2005 on Mustang V8 but I haven't got the money for one of them yet).

Integrale Evo or a 22B.

Classic Imprezas are just classic Imprezas. I've had mates with RB5s and P1s, none of them have the "oooh hello" factor an Integrale Evo has. Now, if you changed that to a 22B, my stance would change but then again, I think for either the £8k budget is thoroughly out the window.

A Spec C Impreza is the answer, will not depreciate, its the modern equivent of an Integrale E2 but being Japanese is actually better to drive and of course more reliable ( and if you get a Spec C ltd they have aircon which makes it a lot more useable). Budget around £10k.

Integralle time has passed inow uesess you want it for a high value garage queen that needs to be kept hidden from the damp and being at least 22 yrs old has the potential for all sorts of trouble, but will be a good investment as prices continue to go up. I've not had a Delta since 1993 and even back then they had started to rot through the rear of the roof, A pillars. Door frames so be prepared for a dissolving investment if you want to use it use it a lot!
