The lad I cycled to school had a 4 speed. I was always a touch envious.

Ha - I've just bought one for my 6yo daughter's bike, along with the hub itself, the cable and lever. You can't get gears on a bike with wheels smaller than 20" (in general) and she's not ready for a bigger bike yet, however the little-girl bikes aren't really suitable for our family rides (up to 10 miles). She needed a lower gear for the hills.



Works a treat and she seems to "get" when to change gear instinctively.

Haha - 2nd gear never worked - ever!

^^^ It's all about set-up... of course. 2nd gear is the 1:1 ratio, with 1st being 75% and 3rd being 133.33%.

The selector pin screws into the hub and the cable tension should be set so that 1st gear can easily be selected with a little bit of slack to enable the lever to click into place. All other ratios will work perfectly.

It's even easier than that, line up the detent in second gear and you're good to go

it often seemed that i had to set it up so that i had either 1st and 2nd OR 2nd and 3rd
couldnt have all three
