Hello To All, I have finally signed up to Pistonheads after, I must shamefully admit, being a lurker for the last few years since buying my first Monaro.

So Yeah I've had a Monaro VXR Supercharged.
a Monaro VXR.
and now im on to a VXR8 Ls2.

Which is what this post concerns- Is there any other VXR8 owner in the Central belt (Glasgow-Ayrshire- Lanarkshire type way) with a Walkinshaw exhaust system??

The VXR8 I have came with a Wortec Switchable system which I found too Raspy.
The first Monaro was originally from Greens and sounded like heaven on earth with a thunderous V8 rumble no matter what engine load or rpm- magic. biggrin
So I decided the solution was to emulate the old Monaro's soundtrack.
SO off came the Wortec back boxes & I got identical back boxes to the ones on the Monaro from Greens made.

Now the Drone is significant under load at 2000rpm- from what ive seen on other posts this is the sweet spot for these cars.
Which is perplexing as one would think the exact same system should give the exact same noise.

So i'm thinking of a Walkinshaw system as this is the closest sound I can find to the old 'Ro & would be more than greatful if anyone close would mind giving me a once over if they have a Walkinshaw system to get a proper idea before im disappointed again tryig to chase V8 nirvana.

Cheers thumbup

Let me help you on this one.

I had the Wortec system and it sounded fantastic, really loved it. Its very in your face as you know.

My mate Nick who is a deserter as he fked off to Australia to shag a wallaby he had the Walkinshaw system.

As much as I loved my car I said next time I get a vxr8 I would get the walky system, its a more mature sound that is great on the run. But its less in your face. So a trade off, maturity and quality sound over immaturity sounding the bks 28 miles away

Another vote here for the Walkinshaw system. Sounds like you've already experienced the sharpness of the Wortec, if that's not quite what you're after then the Walkinshaw system if the way forward for sure.

Plenty of owners up north of the border on here - maybe one of them is nearby. Friendly lot up there smile

I'm in Glasgow if you are interested in hearing a Magnaflow?

Edit: Nemesis are one of the UK distributors - they have a couple for sale on ebay at the moment.

Hello Lads, haha thanks very much for the offers & the sharp replies, much appreciated.
I agree the Wortec makes plenty of noise but sadly it sounds like a chav wagon which just defeats & doesn't do justice to a big V8.
I want a rumble if I want a rasp ill buy a corsa with a big back box.

So I tried to be smart & only got half way there with half the sound intended & twice the drone.
So instead of chase a hopeless cause im just going to bite the bullet & get something proven.

Well im away at sea the now but ill be back by the end of the month so what times suit you guys.. a weekend I presume?

mik- that would be spot on to get a comparison & im in town a lot of the time.
VXR8 FQ- that's the system im thinking of so I could easily nip through or would I be able to catch you on my way down the road from Aberdeen?
Wav8- Are you the Lad I keep seeing round about Irvine area? biggrin im just up the road in nardini town smile is it the cat back you've got or headers the lot?

The Monaro System Was- Headers, Sports Cats, X cross over, thin cylindrical back box, big ovals & as I say its the best system ive heard on any of them.

The only difference with the system ive botched together is the headers but I wouldn't have thought that would have accounted for the drone though I could get the volume??

Thanks again

Yes - weekends are invariably better for me as I work away a lot. We can sort something nearer the time.

PS - there is a black R8 with a Wortec on it in Largs. Doesn't post on here.
PPS - Kevbridgend has a custom system made up by Wullie at Meerkat Exhausts in Kilbirnie. Might also be worth adding that into the equation? (I haven't heard his car under load, but it is louder than the Magnaflow)

If it's the white one you see round about Troon, Irvine at weekends yep thats me sometimes at Bridgend too.Had a car with the Walky on it and reckon it was by far the best sounding one toobiggrin, however the system on mine at present is pretty good too.

I have the 3" Wortec Cat-Back and stay in Fife also. Could all meet up and get a good comparison.

Yeah that would be spot on & a fine idea Nick. Anyone else up for that?

Haha the Black R8 with the wortec on it might be the one in question ;-)
Ive seen you the odd time Wav... but who is the lad with the red one inn Irvine then?

So is anyone game for nicks suggestion of a get together or would it still be alright to come & see you one on one?

Cheers for the help lads & im surprised there is more vxr8s in our corner of Britain than I thought.

IMHO, it's the rear boxes that drone on an R8.

We had a VXR8 with a standard system, and put Magnaflow rear boxes on - they droned.

We swapped to standard boxes with cutouts, and they didn't drone (even with the cutouts open).

Now we have a Ute. With just rear boxes replaced with straight through pipes, it droned. Now, we have removed the centre resonators, and the centre collector, and replaced with an 'X' pipe, into standard VXR8 rear boxes, and there's no drone. With cutouts on them, there's more noise, but still no drone.

Not tried the straight-through rear pipes on the 'X' pipe system, but I reckon it will drone.

My VXR8 has the cat back Wortec system set to loud and i haven't noticed any drone?, in fact i'm surprised how quiet it is inside when cruising along until you hit the loud pedal smile

Aye aye mik where is it you spotted me at?
It isn't the wortec that is the problem for drone it's the customised system I made identically to emulate a system I had on a monaro that is the drone problem.
The wortecs I don't like because I find them too raspy.
I had a really good video on youtube of a white r8 doing a strip in Dubai which sounded good but ive lost the link to the brute.
Newcastle I won't be at home for sadly as I saw that on here & would have come down as I rather like Newcastle.
