Well the astra VXR hasn't sold, new car being delivered on friday so i have to bite the bullet and go to Webuyanycar. I have an appointment booked for 4pm this afternoon. The offer price wasn't great but its better than what the trade value is but i can't afford to be bidded down as I'm on the floor with paying finance off and having enough to pay the deposit for new car also.

Anyone got any tips or inside info on how these guys operate and what to be aware of?

Thanks in advance :

First of all have you described every scratch and imperfection? I've heard they will revise their offer if you haven't been totally up front about any cosmetic imperfections.

No first hand experience, but in your shoes i would stand my ground and be prepared to walk if they start chipping ridiculous amounts off the starting price.

From reading threads on the subject here and elsewhere, i get the impression that their assessors get paid more by paying you less.

I've only use them once and got the full amount from them. The paintwork on my car wasn't great and i'd highlighted a couple of marks on their website, but you can't get everything. Maybe I just caught them on a good day!

Like the poster above, i'd set a price in your head that you won't go under. EG Walk away if they try knocking more than £100 off. I imagine they'd be up for negotiation, as condition is quite subjective.

I'd give it a clean inside and out so it's looking it's best.
Certainly wouldn't mention new company car arriving.

If you've been honest on your forms then they have very little reasons to knock you down (unless of course you come across as desperate and they decide to leverage and take the piss).

Mate wanted rid of his vectra. 2 months MOT left. Otherwise it seemed half decent with about 80k miles. 53 plate i seem to remember.

He's not a car person at all. Cars are a tool. He wasn't confident of it going through another MOT and he'd started taking the bus to work so didn't need the car anymore.

WBAC offered £240. He was happy enough with that.

On arrival they knocked off a £90 admin fee.

Then on inspection they knocked off a further £80 for a few scratches.

Faced with getting nothing for it, he was quite unhappy and asked if there was more they could do. A quick "call to the manager" got him a few quid more.

He walked away with about £100.

This. Sold my 9-5 estate to them earlier in the year, decided as I was so busy (daughter in hospital, replacement on the drive already) they allowed me to avoid tyre-kickers and time wasters.

All the scratches are noted and they look for rust and dents everywhere so be honest with your description. Also, make sure your paperwork is up to date and correct (guy before me had an MOT cert with a higher mileage than the car had, it was obvious it was a typo at the MOT station as two numbers were transposed but his offer was halved).

The guy I dealt with was fair and reasonable but remember that they just pass your car on to the trade, so they have to make money somewhere and are very risk averse when it comes to valuations as they can get stung the other end.

That said I was in and out in 20 mins and got 90% of what I was quoted for the car, while avoiding spending a lot of time and hassle advertising it so to me it was worth it.

My son used them for his A3 tdi, quite high miles (80+) but only 5 years old. The on-line price quoted was honoured, no money taken off. The car was clean and besides some stone chips on the front a straight car.
It does seem that older cars are not wanted, so wbac really means we buy newer cars but will give low low money for older ones imo.
Btw he was happyish with the price and he bought cash with a good discount so it worked for him.

Can you send these mates to me in future? He was robbed blind.

I did a WBAC quote on my Audi last week out of curiousity, it was lower than expected so ignored it.

I've received two emails since offering me more money?

Bit late in the game, but have you tried www.SellCar-UK.com? I got a much better figure from them than I got from WBAC. Plus their fee structure was much better.

Very positive experience here.

Offered about £1000 less than I had it advertised for, Happy with that as it was what I paid for the car.

The guy took £50 off as it had missed a service so was 'part service history' and it had a long scratch down one side where I'd caught it on a bush down a country lane. He said they charge £50 per panel to get them re-finished. Said If I wanted to go home and try to polish them out he'd up his offer by £150.

I did this and he was true to his word. Very nice chap, didnt even open the bonnet. was a 2008 civic with 35k on it.

If you are honest with your appraisal then you give them nothing to haggle over. You know what to expect.
Good luck!

Google car buying services. I sold my BMW through one a couple of months back which is part of the Car People. Offered me over a grand more than WBAC, still about a grand less than it was advertised for but I was in a rush to sell like the OP and it was a price I was pretty happy with given the fact I didn't have to deal with private buyers.

Knocked me down on a few bits but only a hundred quid or so...

Thank you for all your replies.

Car sold.

i got offered £345 less than the opening quote.

4 x alloys (they class anything with even a scratch as a 'refurb' and a few other bits including drivers seat bolster. Everything he found was fair enough in my opinion.

They still paid £300 over what the top trade in value was, even with the faults so over all i am happy.

Must say, bloke i dealt with was a pleasure, he was really friendly, completely non-salesy/bullstty - just really honest and open.

Yes they bidded me down, but the things they found were genuine.

He didn't even open the bonnet - really surprised by this.

Overall - very impressed with the service.

Bit odd isn't it, they offer more money, but you know when they inspect they will try to knock it all back off again. oh well, all those car supermarkets need cheap stock (at least I think that is what they do with them?)

You can't just come on Pistonheads and be complimentary about WBAC. Thems the rules.
