Hi all. Been a lurker/sly poster for a little while.
I seem. To be in a plethora of really really really (did I mention really) talented engineer/gods and my ongoing project is going to seem sooooooooo hobbyist. But here goes. Pic of near standard car


Bought a couple of years ago from a dealer in Ripley Derbyshire. Relatively low(ish for a diesel) mileage 87k
2.2 TDCi ST. I wasn't actually looking for one. Or even knew of they're existence. I was initially out for a focus for a daily/project/ST replica but for the money they are really really (here we go again lol!! ) good cars. It's fullly specced as a higher than titanium model with only toys missing being satnav and heated/cooled seats (oh and recaros) 😢 but all the toys are there (in my eyes) previous car was a fiesta zetec s (Im ford through and through) here's a picture of my previous

Thus modified into a road going track car which killed my spine off pretty soon lol
after the initial period of (I'm definitely not modifying this) I got a k&n 57i kit. And wind deflectors. Which sprang into a massive £380 intercooler by airtec. Then a full silicon hose kit and a Decat. Then after several happy miles I decided to modify the looks under the bay with a bit of wheeler dealers inspires water transfer decals. Better known as dipping. I went for an imperial blue base with black carbon looking top layer.

Which even If I do say looks awesome in the flesh. I'll update pics as its a bit more modified since.
Then onto highly expensive mods. If you're at all familiar with modernish fords with polished wheels as standard you'll know about porous alloys. I was literally pumping up every day on way home from work. So I bit the bullet and had some wheels (I just had lying around) refurbished

These show off my upgrades in the braking area. It is currently focus ST225 brakes with dimpled and grooved discs. A really reasonable £90 for the discs but £50 for pads 😳 a must with higher performance mondeos as the standard 1.8 petrol discs ate shocking!! Here's a relatively new pic with the wheels and eibach (did I mention that) suspension upgrade. Hope my Mrs doesn't read this ever lol. Well I'm tired after a lovely night shift so do enjoy my pics and comment as you wish. I've driven one of these. I wouldn't mind another go in one. I've heard of the brake mods for the 3 litre V6s. That engine cover is pretty snazzy.

Nice car op, and nice upgrades. the brakes are a must. Get it remapped and it will become a flyer as well, showing an st220 a clean pair of heels due to the massive amount of torque it gets.

There is an owners forum for these - stoc - I'd check it out if you haven't already.

Ah that old chestnut. Been debated many times. What you will end up with is much improved performance, but when my old ST220 went up against a few mapped TDCIs it never lost. It's new owner has had it on track against a few too and to the best of my knowledge not lost there either. With your more advanced mods then yes, you will live with an ST220 on the road, but no a remapped one will not show an 'st220 a clean pair of heels'. Just watch out for injector issues. EGR valve will go wrong sooner or later - Jag does the same part cheaper than Ford, or if it's a euro 3 engine you can blank it with no issues.


Focus ST brakes and Eibach springs are both excellent mods. I think the Eibachs ride better than the standards with improved handling too - win win.

Bought myself one of these a few months back after an abandoned period of shedding.

I'll back up what you say, comfy car, handles well, useful turn of speed.

Thanks for all Your comments. I forgot to say egr own blanked after a good clean. Mine is the earlier (euro3) vacuum type engine rather than the later electronic system so no worries there. It was a Ford owned car for most of its life and has an extensive history including replacing dmf and injectors just before I bought it so no worries there for at least another 70k.
I am already an owners club member as I believe in knowing my cars inside and out and having direct contact with people in the know if something does go awry.
I've done lots of little modifications which I will take photos of when I get chance and there will be updates very soon.

Here's a taster of my subtle upgrade/mods
I did update to the final facelift rear lights in my first pics. But I grew tired of the chrome look it gave and returned to my standard rear lights but I tweaked them myself using ''fly eye'' film

Also done the fronts (badly)

But as I did them badly (creases etc) I removed the fronts. They're are already internally tinted anyway so was slight overkill.
More on my lighting to come as I got carried away with the smd/led conversion craze. Thanks for viewing

Good find. The injectors being done is a big plus.

Put down the Barry'ing Stick! Step away from eBay for a second.... Look how good it looked in your first photograph. Whilst the performance mods might be benefitting it, the 'subtle' mods are slowly ruining it.

It is a lovely car, I always wanted a MK1 Focus TDCi Sport in that colour but ended up with Magnum Grey. Just don't let the Mondeo go the same way that poor FZS did.

They aren't bad cars
Currently getting 550 miles to a tank.
Remapped they aren't faster than the ST220 but with a hybrid turbo they are. A couple knocking about running about 220bhp.

Just buying an EGR as mine is playing up and the car is cutting out because of it. Hopefully will fix it.

I only changed the wheels during to the lack of airtight(ness???)
And I actually didn't like the lights so removed it straight after
I am well versed in the ongoing 220/tdci debate and know a very respected tuner/modifier
I don't expect my tuning to go as far as a hybrid turbo but I'm steadily doing all the other mods before a remap l
After a remap I'm. Expecting between 185-190bhp as the standard turbo cannot possibly flow any more despite dodgy tuner claims.

I quite fancy one of these to replace the wife's Mk5 Golf GTI as the family car. Growing family and cost of fuel considerations, but I still want something semi interesting. This generation ST to my mind is one of the best looking 'big' hatches made.

I am currently getting between 500-600miles to a text to a tank and use 2 stroke oil in every tank this is a specific type with the additive jaso fb in it. It cleans and lubricates the fuel system and pump actually increases mpg too.
I honestly don't see the debate on petrol/tdci as they are such different machines
Only the body shell is same. The driving experience is totally different. I bought this as I wanted a diesel it just happened to have a far better spec than the equivalent focus as I was never straying from ford at all. That black beast is well sexy!! I'm. Tempted to get an estate next as the ST estate looks great imo. Again thanks for your views and comments.

probably about £1500 in mods.
Hybrid £600 remap £300 exhaust £300 decat £100 intercooler £150.
Mine is just a daily car, some people will spend thousands on theirs. It's their money.

The Mondeo ST is proper nice in the estate version. Would love a white one for the dog

Stock wheels look better IMHO.

TDI will feel faster than the petrol due to the low rpm torque. The 220 has to be reved hard to get the best outta it. Great cars though, my old one was very good around the ring although it had MPSS all round which helped loads.
