Morning

So after 8 years Im moving the Porsche on it has been a sad car at times (engine rebuild, gearbox rebuild) and a fun car round the countryside with that flat six... the dilemma is what to buy next and Im stuck but here is a list and appreciate input or ones Ive not thought of.

Jaguar XK-R Supercharged with Speed/Black Pack - 5.0 beast in black around 2010 with low mileage I can get for 33K 0-60 in 4.6 secs and it roars with a V8 and lovely to drive.

Challenge is - badge snobbery is a Jag a car that turns heads ?

Aston Martin Vantage - 2006 with reasonable miles around 33K - looks lovely and sounds awesome, drives fab.

Challenge is - whats the issues with the car as it will be 8 years old and Im not going down porsche route again, also is it just the badge and look Im buying.

Porsche - Another 911 but newer... Im not really looking but is it worth going back into a newer shape and power train.

Challenge - have I done the porsche thing.

Bentley Continetnal GT/Flying Spur - Took flying spur out at weekend now that is a fast car but Im only 43 and think that one is definitely for later in life, whilst the GT is it a nice car ? or a footballers car.

One of those things where if I only had 5k it would be simple but as spending and loaning so much money, the choices are limited but not !!!!

Swaying to the Jag at the moment, its a scary car to drive in the wet and fun but on the motorway is luxurious and fun as it will pull to beyond 175

Thoughts, ideas or cars to look at.

If I had another 10K

my dream would be Audi R8 so want one but out of price range or a Lambo.

Personally, I'd go for the Jag whenever I see one I look at it, especially the R versions. The Aston is the same, but some people will see it as trying to hard.

if you've done the 911, you'll get into a new one and wont find it special.

Conti GT's are nice, but seen as a footballers car.

Have you thought about a Maserati Granturismo?

Sounds like you've talked yourself into the Jag already but you want people in here to tell you it will turn heads and isn't an old man's car. It will, and it isn't. An XKR is unbelievably cool and makes a truly dirty noise. Do it.

If you are considering the Aston, buy the bible first:-
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Then go to the AM forum on here.

Two major issues with cars of that age, seems to be a few dogs out there in that price range, not well looked after. Other one will be clutch. Typically last 30-40k before needing replacmeent. So check has it ever been done - its £2.5-£3.5k for replacement.

Not seen many major issues reported on the engine / gearbox. Early cars needed the thermostat replacing, but not costly and be surprised if there are any out there that haven't been done. Also check the paint, especially around the door handles / wing mirror mounts, for bubbling. Its not just - poor prepration at the factory. Probably missed a few things so check in the AM forum.

Neil - I'm with you (and bias!), the Aston isn't as sharp a tool as the Porsche IMHO, but sharper than the Jag. You will always get looks driving an Aston (but probably true of a nice looking Jag too). If you've no need for 4 seats then why not? Sounds like a great opportunity to drive a few cars!

There are some dogs out there - look for full service records, good quality tyres and the like - not too different to buying a 911 really. smile

£32k will get you a well cared for facelift car whistle

Right about the Jag its the last bit of convincing, I had one for a weekend when they came out as part of a promotion to get Porsche buyers to blog and promote them and to be honest I smiled every moment I drove it as it was a scary car but roared.

The Aston is a sort of like you say trying to hard and not convinced on its reliability...whilst the Jag I 5.0 engine I can't find any issues up to now and the one Im looking at is a black with speed pack and black pack late 2010.

Finance in place hopefully today its the last minute decision to make.

I did look at Ultima as well but definitely not practical to drive to Skipton train station and leave there for a week

It won't, and it is.

I still love them, but eggs is eggs.

Reliability is fine on the new generation of Astons. You will find they have their foibles, but all cars do. I've yet to hear of the requirement for regular engine rebuilds - unlike the 911!

What about a Lotus Evora? They don't need frequent engine rebuilds either.

it would be the Jag for me, i think the 5.0 R is a stunning car in every way, if and when you get bored of the performance they're very easy to uprate too

Coming from a more modern 911, I found the Aston to be really disappointing to drive. They look great, and some of them have nice interiors, but they're expensive to run for what you get.

I too like the Jags. As an alternative, and well within budget, have you thought about a 4.0 V8 M3? It'll turn heads as much as the Jag or a 911 (ie not much) but will be quicker than the Aston, a decent steer, fairly reliable and makes a nice noise.

You havent really said what you want the car to do , is it for cruising and tours , b road blasting , occasional track day ?.

For the ultimate track day / A/B road mental machine try a Noble m12 GT03/R. Most exhilarating car for £30K in my opinion. However if you want a little more refinement i can highly recommend the Lotus Evora s. Fantastic handling , nice to go long distances in and track days not a problem, plus gets a lot of looks in the right colour.
Jag and Aston are both nice though , probably go for the Aston as they have that all important manual gearbox

Yep Im not impressed by the Aston drive, good friend of mine has had two and the Porsche is a much better experience and the Jag also has great feedback and both aren't as tight as the 911.

Yep GT-R is out of price range they are still at the 40K mark and have looked at the Lotus its just not quite doing it for me, Id like a second hand one around 10k as a weekend fun car but at 30K can't say why just doesn't hit the mark.

Been looking at some youtube videos and it seems the Jag will slam dunk 0-60 easily, also take a look at a Bentley Flying Spur took one of those out they are massive but so lovely to drive but power wise put the porsche, jag and Aston to shame... :-)

Could be the best looker too and certainly doesn't sound too shabby. How's the reliability though?

I wouldn't get hung up on reliability, each car has it's own problems, and providing you get them done and the car maintained, I wouldn't worry unless something breaks. You're buying fair new, low mile cars so you shouldn't get much trouble.

The Jag would get my vote.

Can someone explain the whole footballers car image? Does it mean only footballers drive them?

There a few round my neck of the woods and all but one is driven by middle age women. The other by a chap who owns a series of shops.

Possibly originally a Clarksonism.

Used to indicate that it was bought for the image and the associations that it projects (usually a self-perception of taste and class but ultimately resulting in a lack of same) rather than other qualities as a car. People from poorer backgrounds coming into money (e.g. footballers raking in tens of thousands a week) thinking that buying items that old money people buy, buys them the background too. Some people try to emulate their heroes, and the likes of footballers (and Katie Price etc.) have a lot of fans, therefore further removing the new image of the car from its original image.

Disclaimer: I don't care about class, image or perception, that's just my take on other's motivations, conscious or not.
