Just watching Senna and watched the F1 in Russia the other day.

Clearly the aero now gives loads more downforce, the brakes, tyres and suspension are infinitely better and the end result is a much faster lap than was achievable back then.

So why does the in car footage seem fast but with a moderate sense of viewer speed. You see any of the 80's cars and you're on the edge of your seat and they look on the ragged edge. It's compelling.

Thoughts?

Tech has moved on for cameras as well. Better editing, less shaky cam footage, better refresh time and fps all means nice clear footage in wind angle views which probably make it look like they are going slower.

It's mostly down to the camera. Back in the day it was a 4:3 ratio and you saw further up the track and the sky, you got a better sense of perspective. Look at a modern on board shot, it's a 16:9 ratio, but it isn't any wider, they've just chopped the top off.

Changeover appears to be 2009.
