996 Turbo - Aerokit Removal
Discussion
A rather nice low-mileage 996 turbo has just come on the market and my guess is it won't be sale for long.
The problem for me is the Aerokit.
I'm probably in a minority, but I much prefer the original look. I would go so far as to say the Aerokit would prevent me from buying an otherwise beautiful car.
I assume it would be quite a costly exercise to find and fit the standard type spoilers on the car.
Anyone got a ball park figure ?

The aerokit is hard to come by in the second hand market. You will have no problems converting it to stock look and you would have no problems selling the aerokit for good money so don't be fooled by people offering a swap. If it were me I would just grab a decklid off ebay when one comes up for sale and keep the aerokit for when you resale the car.The problem for me is the Aerokit.

Looks nice.
Not a fan of the larger painted front splitter on the aerokit cars or the painted front slats.
My advice is buy the car, keep it as it left the factory apart from buying a basic black plastic front splitter and keep the original aerokit part for refitting prior to resale. Someone will be along in a moment to point out that you can't do this as it will unbalance the car at higher speeds. Perhaps, but having seen a modified 996GT2 with the rear wing totally removed so the driver can do over 200mph at Bruntingthorpe, accellerate, brake hard and drive around corners without spinning off, I'd be minded to try it for road and faster road speeds.
I'd also repaint the silver painted slats black.
As these cars get older, having the aerokit rear spolier means you won't have any costly issues with the rear spoiler hydraulics which the standard car can suffer from.

The 996 Turbo aerokit is fairly subtle so I wouldn't let it put you off. Yes it has a larger spoiler but not materially larger than the spoiler on the standard car that deploys above 75mph...... and you will be spending a lot of time above 75 mph.
Decent low mileage manual 996 tts are like hen's teeth so if you are after one I'd seriously think about buying this one, IMO the aerokit is a non issue.
If you were to remove the aerokit the big bills will be in respraying the new engine cover to match the existing metallic paintwork. This won't be cheap so I'd budget a good few hundred pounds for this plus the cost of the new boot lid so well into four figures all in.

Market for desirable older cars is red hot. You blink you lose. That was a fairly priced car - it was always gong to sell - upside is you get to buy a car without aerokit and I'm sure one will turn up eventually
Good thing is I'm not stuck on a 996 Turbo, I'm just looking for a nice older Porsche.
I knew that car wouldn't hang around. Problem is the decent air-cooled stuff is selling just as quickly.
I have other cars so I'll accommodate whichever Porsche I get by changing them around.
I'm also looking at anything air cooled (not turbos) and will just go for the best car I can afford irrespective of the model.
Going to look at a low mileage 3.2 Carrera some time next week.
