I'm currently sat in a dealership waiting while my car is being serviced. In the middle of the dealership is the same car as mine in a colour/ wheel combination I would never have chosen but under the lights of the showroom looks fantastic.

So my question is. When you're selling cars if you place a red car in the showroom, do you find people start placing more orders for the car in red?

In short, Yes.

We have a Toyota Auris in our showroom in a colour called Tungsten Blue (Dark blue/grey) Since it's been in the showroom we have sold quite a few, beforehand we sold hardly any in this colour.

I seem to recall that the colour of cars shown in TV and press adverts is very often ordered in preference to the others.

You always see a lot of Fords like this - magenta Fiestas (seen on TV) seem very popular and years ago when the Mondeo was launched a very bright yellow colour (again, on TV).

That brings out another thing. The new Jaguar XE has been unveiled to the world in Italian Racing Red, a colour that you can spec for the same price as the other 'normal' metallic options. However if you spec it on the XF it's twice the price of the 'normal' metallic. Jag must feel that a lot of people will be wanting their Italian red XE but would be put off the price if it was a £1300 option and thus look elsewhere.

I'd say that Mazda 2 launch advert in green sold a lot of them which they probably wouldn't have otherwise.

Absolutely.

When I was at Mercedes I was ordering some cars for stock and specced up an SLK 350 with a manual box, which I was warned would be with us forever as noone ordered manual Mercedes. I specced it up in silver with red leather, AMG bodystyling and wheels and a few other bits (COMAND, telephone prewire, heated seats and airscarf) and put it in the middle of the showroom, it romped out within days and we had orders for several more cars in that combination.
