Just come across these: -

Autosocks. Basically canvas snow-chains, makes standard tyres stick well to ice etc. And not bulky like chains so won't damage your bodywork!

Now I don't know about anyone else, but I recon for the sake of 60 quid having a set of these in the boot is better than being caught out on a snowy/icy day and having to abandon your car somewhere dodgy, or even where other people might slide into you!!

DOH! Apart from the small oversight that they don't make one wide enough for most TVR wheels

Can't imagine them be over-friendly to alloys either, never mind spiders

They seem to promote them for alloys etc so one would hope that the non-road-surface-contact bit is soft and gentle to the wheels
