Sluggish from 40 mph onwards, headlight icon flashes when on, and full beam won't stay on for more than a couple of seconds, also air conditioning comes on when only on full and even then only for few seconds. Please can you help me to diagnose these faults and suggest anything else to do thanks

How old is the battery? A knackered battery can cause a lot of strange electrical issues so it might be worth getting it checked out.

Thank you my suspicions too,was also guessing just needing a service, spark plugs and an oil change.. Maby the filter on the fuel pump.she is actually very smooth but lacking in performance.. She struggles to get over 70..

Diesels don't have spark plugs. Oil and filters wouldn't do any harm though, if you're keeping it otherwise I would fix the electrics before spending any more money on it.

If it's the naturally-aspirated HDi, that's typical.

I thought all HDI's were turbo? The earlier 1.9 NA's were not HDI's.

They are. The DW8 engine is the non-turbo, non-common-rail version of the HDi, badged as 1.9D just as the earlier XUDs were.

OP - is it a facelifted Xsara, or the original look? One of the things that changed with the facelift was the introduction of multiplexing.

On the way up to 40mph can you still make the turbo "pull"? You need to determine if boost is being generated to then determine if you have a pressure leak or failed turbo. If it still pulls hardish in second gear then you can probably eliminate those areas.

Headlights could be a dodgy connection on the indicator stalk, had a similar issue on a facelifted Xsara. Its a steering wheel off job to replace but a new stalk is only £15ish.

The power issue does sound like lack of boost, there are three electrovalves at the top off the engine under the bonnet with black vaccuum pipes going in and out of them. I think the turbo one is on the left with the pipe exiting down the back left side of the engine. You can swap it with the one that connects to the pipe from the intercooler to test to see if its knackered. or new ones are £40ish from ECP.

Apologies, then. The daughters b/f had an early Berlingo some years ago. It was badged as an HDi but deffo had no blower. And no power...
