Alright, I am possibly buying a car privately on Friday. I was looking into sorting out the tax before I bought the car so I can just go and pick it up. But from what I can make out I cant tax the vehicle until I have the new keepers slip. I this correct or can I tax vehicle before I go to pick it up?

You can only tax the vehicle as the new owner. This question has been asked and answered in about a million and one other threads.

Using the green slip is fine.

Given you'll need the 16 digit code from the VED renewal letter or the 11 digit code from the V5C, I'm going to say you'll need to have bought the car and have the V5 in your possession before you can tax it. Normal practice is to go to the post office with the bits of V5 you will have (part is sent away to register you as new keeper) and tax it then. Or just use your phone/WiFi there an then and do it on the government website. It's new online service is very easy and straight forward. But you need one of those codes.

and bear in mind that the tax isn't actually cancelled until the DVLA is notified of the new keeper.
