Hot & cold fans - very different?

Does any one else find the hot fan has a much higher output than the cold, I’ll probably answer my own question here – I’d guess the air con matrix reduces the output of the fan as I assume it always blows through it? When I took the hot apart for the recirculation mod I was talking about, I found quite a few leaves in there, if they are in the cold side, they can’t be helping…
So has anyone out there taken the cold fan & air con unit (are they one) out? I had a bit of a go but it was a tight fit & Mandy had just forked out £800 to get the air con system fixed (collapsed pipe = total overhaul) so I didn’t want to tempt fate.
Obviously the output of the cold fan isn’t much to worry about this time of year! But I was thinking ahead…

Any of you have experience with the Cerb's heating system tell me why I only get cold air out of the driver's footwell outlet, whereas the passenger gets warm?
And although the manual says the red and blue lights behind the fan controls come on only when the fans are running, mine are on all the time.
It's difficult tometimes to know whether the fans are running or not, what with all the noise!

Presumably you are opening the vent on the side of the gearbox tunnel and not under the steering column?

Mine are extactly the same...also with the noise draining out the fan nosie...but I can tell if the hot is on by opening the 'said vent' in the side of the tunnel...and the same with either of the steering column ones
Yeah, I tried to explain in the common faults thread, but probably didn’t make a very good job!
I can only vouch for the 98 4.5, but I’d guess the others are basically the same although there quite a few different hot / cold air outlets on the different models.
The air supply for the hot & cold comes from front of the car, with the different holes in the front letting it in, so the faster you go the more is forced in. Each wing is hollow, right back to the door hinges & (should be) sealed. The driver’s side wing is used for the cold air supply & houses the cold fan & I think the air con unit. The passenger wing is used to supply the air hot fan, where it is also housed, I think along with the heater matrix. So if you look under the dash you can see a big flexible pipe going across the top of the foot well, from the inner wing into the centre which on the drivers side supplies all the cold air & on the passenger side, the hot. These both connect in to a big box behind the dash, where the air is supposed to mix to your desired temperature (supposedly achieved by setting the fans at different speeds). All the hot air vents are supplied by this box. The trouble is the supply from the box to hot air outlet by your feet is right next to the big cold air input pipe, so if you have the cold fan on at all most of it will come out the easiest path – to your feet! This is also the reason the passenger side of the car gets much hotter than the drivers in the winter and the drivers side cooler in the summer.
If you don’t have the cold fan on & cold is still coming out: There is a one way valve on each of the input pipes & if the cold doesn’t shut properly it will always let in cold air. If you take that big pipe off where it goes in to the box, you have to take the curved panel beneath the steering column off to get to it, you can see the valve (just a bit of aluminium on a little hinge) It should snap shut when the hot fan is switch on, if it’s not there’s the problem.
The lights by the fan switch / knobs, on the 98 anyway, don’t tell you the fan if is on. The red one tell you the heated rear window is on & the blue one tells you the air con is on.
As for knowing if they are on it's guess work at speed with the cold anyway, it being so poor which leads back to my question
