Standard question when looking at car insurance it ask whether you are the registered keeper

Does it make much difference if you are or not?

Yes and no.

Some Insurers actively won't quote on different registered keepers. Others will happily accept your spouse as the reg keeeper.

Thanks

I usually do quotes online as feel they are comparable
So I'll just go with the ones which quote

Would it make the quote amount £ different though?

Different from insurer to insurer.

Some will have a flat out policy where they won't touch you.

Others will so long as the registered keeper is an immediate family member.

Others will so long as the registered keeper is at the same address as you.

Others couldn't give a toss and will insure anyone with all sorts of different criteria.

The hardest one I've had experience with was my mother trying to insure her car which she got through my work scheme, with me as the legal owner, a company as the registered keeper. 70% of insurance companies wouldn't touch her all saying the same phase (can't remember exactly what it was) to do with risk.

It comes down to insurable interest - e.g. in terms of ownership at least, if your car was stolen you should get the claim money, no one else; this stops someone from taking out an insurance policy on their neighbour's car, then getting money if it gets stolen or written off.

They probably don't like it if owner and registered keeper are two completely unrelated people as it would probably confuse who has the insurable interest.

Again, varies from insurer to insurer. Some have better rates for companies being the owner as it's perceived the car will be looked after better.

There is no logic to insurance, as each company with have their own algorithms working out what risk is associated with certain criteria.

I was quoted an extra £5 when I declared I wasn't the RK.
