A 996 for £5.5k....An opportunity missed?
Discussion
I paid a visit to a BCA site yesterday, during which time I eyed a 996 which was going to be sold. Here's the salient points, Y reg, 146k miles,10 previous owners, loads of history (clearly not all OPC), 5 months MOT, silver in colour, all panels straight and true although the front bumper was cracked (probably repairable). Reasonable tyres but the wheels could do with a re-furb.
I was amazed when the hammer came down at £5150. Therefore, even with fees, that would have come in at £5500.
Cheap way to get a 911 or money pit?

Money pit. that's silly money for a 996, I wouldn't touch one for less than £9k-ish
Not sure I agree - the £9k 996 could be a dog and the £5.5k one could be a bargain. Parts are costly, but £2-3k would go a fair way at an indy and as long as there's nothing horrific going on, you're money is probably as safe as with any leggy 996. Buy, service, run for year, sell without loss.
That said, it's not for the faint hearted - I tried following my own advice with a £3k Boxster 2 yrs ago and ensed up down by about a grand down.

Funnily enough, this was my thoughts. Given the cheapest 996, on here, is @£9k yesterdays one could have made sense. Obviously this was a cheap car... even if it has a major fault it is worth that as spares or repairs!
My 996 cab was bought from bca Enfield for £7250 18 months ago, much lower mileage with all Porsche / recognised Porsche specialists, even a nice purchase invoice for when last chap bought it for £27k 7 years prior.
These cars are cheap and have always been cheap - I bought a turbo bodied sc for £7k as a teenager...
But what do I know I'm only at bca every day!

I sold my 1999 996 convertible 18 months ago for £10k+, lucky escape. Within 6 months new owner had spent nearly £3k on RMS, roof problem and other bits. He had it all sorted only to find that the gearbox was on its way, and was a £5k+ fix! He ended up chopping it In for a song against a turbo.
Not bad looking Porsches, but pretty slow, not a great drive and have some very expensive problems. Wouldn't get another myself....

RMS or clutch change is a very straightforward job, specialist I know joked writing up the bill takes longer than getting the old clutch on the bench.
A clutch and rms change can be done in five hours if not less.
OE Clutch is not a lot and rms seals are just tens of pounds.
Reason why these are cheap as many retail buyers are brain dead and pay strong premiums from specialists... both for servicing and purchase.
I would argue the image of a 996 is no less than an sl of same vintage.
Will pull 170mph and 5.5 to sixty... quicker / nicer drive than e46 m3 - owned the pair side by side and porker is a cut above, and driven well not a lot gets by them.
