Looking for some advice on buying the family car.
In Jan, along with the Mustang, we need to buy a family/work wagon (room for children and pushchair needed), only looking at spending around £3,500

I am looking at either an '03-'04 Volvo V70 D5 or an '04-'05 Volvo V50. under 100,000 miles, hence my range.

I read an old post on here from 2006, but that was a long time ago and I'm sure things have changed of course, prices, parts, stories etc.

I want to go for diesel and have heard that the V50 have problems, anyone shed any light on this?

Is the V70 easy and cheap enough to add the 2 extra seats if needed?

Of course the V70 is bigger and I do like the bigger Volvo's having owned S80, S70 and 850 in the past, but does anyone have any info re: realistic mpg, is the V50 worth it for the more modern look? current known faults etc?

Or even, should I consider something else similar (taking into account size, safety, mpg, cost, age etc)
Any opinions welcome.

Why, just out of interest, are you so settled on a Volvo? There are millions of cars for your budget/broad requirements.

Simon.

Being the family wagon and having had a few before, they have been reliable, comfortable, spacious, safe, averagely economical, pretty cheap to maintain.....I am open to opinions.

Fair enough. I don't know specifically about the Volvo, but asking about diesel on here will only get the Top Gear brigade out, telling you that every diesel ever made is the slowest, least reliable thing in the world. If you want the diesel, get the diesel, but buy a good one. Mileage is irrelevant provided it's well looked after (applies to every car ever made). I've got a mate whose Nan has a big, petrol Volvo of some kind. She drives Miss Daisy everywhere and gets less than 20mpg. I drive my V8 powered Jaguar as though my trousers are on fire and get better than that.

A Mondeo for that money might be a bit st. Mercedes C or E class estate perhaps similar. I'm useless at recommending cars, to be honest.

Simon.

Dear Stormy
If I was in your shoes... I would not cart kids around in anything less than a Mercedes Benz..safety reasons alone.. Try looking for a Mercedes E Class Estate...or at a push a C class... don't worry about the mileage with these... they can take it... And don't worry about how modern they look...
Is my view
