Just got back to my car that has been in airport car parking for a week and it is in a different bay. I asked why it needed to be moved and got some bullst about making more space near reception. When I went to the car it was nearer reception!

I checked the mileage and it has an extra 1/2 mile on it, sure isn't 1/2 mile from where it was to where it is now (but equally at least it hasn't been out!)

Not sure what to think really. Can't understand why it was moved and can't understand why it went the scenic route...

Any thoughts?

Exactly why I won't leave my car at any airport parking that requires me to leave keys...

Impossible to prove they drove it really...

Any damage?

At a guess they move it and bring it back in time for you to return.

There was a panorama (or some such) investigation into this a while ago. People where leaving their cars in what they thought was a secure compound at the airport only for the car to be driven to a field with no security for the duration of the stay until it was brought back on the day of the punters arrival for collection.

This! Recently booked car parking at Liverpool airport for a hol in December. Read some scary reviews from people who had left their cars at some car parks! Paid a little extra and leaving mine in a car park where I take the keys with me!

Yup - will have been moved to some scummy estate/field ("overflow" I'd guess they call it) and then brought back for your arrival. Should have been made clear when you booked it, but probably wasn't because people would not use the service.

I use www.justpark.com for all my parking now.

+1. They were obviously using it as an airport taxi whilst you were away. I'd be furious too and demand compensation for the fuel and wear and tear.

Got to be a troll, nobody normal would give a st.

I don't know why anyone who likes their car would use these services. In my experience they employ the scummiest of scummy people.

So you do not care if some other scum bag is driving one of the biggest expenditures you will make apart from a house ,well I would , I never use valet parking systems , I park , I lock , I pocket my keys
I never ever park my car where I have to leave keys , The only exception I have ever made was a rental in Las Vegas with hotel valet parking , even then I was aware that if the car was damaged it was down to me hence opting for full damage waiver

The car I leave at the airport is not even expensive, but I'd rather not use any kind of service where I have to leave the keys. I'd rather park and get on a bus.

Question is where has it been during that half mile? Parked in an unsecured "overflow" area? In which case if OP has paid for secure parking he's been ripped off.

Its probably been driven down a service road from the drop off point to a compound and back again.

Draw a circle with a quarter mile radius from the drop off point, thats where its been. Hardly anything to get excited about.

Given the hundreds of cars that these people move every day I very much doubt they take any interest in any of them.

Was it the Copthorne in / near Gatwick? If so they have a field to the rear of the hotel and it gets taken there and put back in the normal bays before you get back.

Google earth shows the compound and it was or worked out for mine about 1/2 a mile.

Id be fuming. Not only have you got to think about fuel they will have wasted, tyre wear, seat wear, key wear from putting it in the ignition, bearing wear from half a mile of driving... The car probably didn't even get up to temperature!! That'll mean there's now condensation in your backbox, which im surprised hasn't rotted itself out by now. Call the Police, contact the newpapers, and make sure you contact one of those 'No win no fee' firms, you deserve a brand new car!

Calm down dearies, no need burst a blood vessel! laugh

I just found it bizarre that they'd seen fit to move it from a spot some distance from reception where it was in no one's way, and somehow managed to drive 1/2 a mile to get to a spot a couple of hundred yards from where it was, and wondered whether anyone could explain why.

Moving the car off site for the week is an interesting theory, hadn't thought of that. But it must be half a mile to the end of the road the car park is down, before you even start going anywhere else, so I don't think that's it in this case.

Genuinely confused as to why they employ people to move cars out of one spot, drive them half a mile round a car park and drop them back into a different one. I can't think how it would benefit them. confused

Odd response. Attempt at humour maybe?

No, Bristol. 'Silver parking'.

The car park is pretty big (and its only a regional airport) so it doesn't feel like a 'holding' car park prior to moving it elsewhere, but maybe that's the answer.
