covering dash in ambla

i'm going to cover my dash in ambla material to match the rest of the interior as its just been spray painted and i think it may have had a wooden look finish originaly . but what i need to know is , should there be some thin foam between the ambla and the dash, does anyone here have the material dash covering and is it spongy or not.
