Hi everyone,

I've just bought a 2011 E200CDI Blueefficiency Sport Auto with 17,000 on the clock... been owned by an old gent and basically driven to the bowling club and back every day. The thing is immaculate inside and out but I'd just like to know whether there's anything I need to watch out for reliability wise going forward?

I only do about 10,000 miles/year these days so, even in 3 years' time, it'll have done less than 50,000 miles. I'm aware of the gearbox fluid needing changing at 3 years (something I'll be doing immediately) but, other than that, is there anything else I should be on the lookout for going forward?

Cheers!

Ian.

My 2011 220Cdi is on 235k miles, and the only thing other than routine servicing has been a top mount on one rear shock,(both were changed under warranty) and very recently a leak from the water pump, which is not bad for that mileage, and an easy replacement done free of charge. Other than that it has been totally reliable, and still looks like new inside, with no rattles or squeeks.

You might find the 200 is a bit underpowered, and don't neglect the transmission fliud change, even if Merc say it doesn't need one.

Gotcha... turns out it's the 5 speed auto with paddles (tiptronic) on the column. I've heard it's a little more clunky but more reliable than the 7-speed. Which 'box does yours have if you don't mind me asking?

I only ask because the gearbox on my A6 has just gone bang very expensively at 100k miles. Getting the Merc is a direct response to that car being written off so I'm pretty paranoid about gearboxes now!

Mine is one of the last 5 speed boxes. This is my 3rd E class with the same box, and they have all done big mileages with no problems. I normally have a fluid change every 60k miles or so, but make sure the torque converter is flushed as well, that holds about 4 litres of oil.

You will probably notice the box getting a bit less smooth when it needs changing.

Gotcha... I'm going to get it as soon as I pick it up anyway. I know it's only done 17,000 miles but it's just over 3 years old and it hasn't been done. Should've been done in the last couple of months. That's one thing I'll always be doing AHEAD of schedule from now on. Thanks for the advice :-)

I know Mercedes specified a fluid change at 37,5k miles on my previous 2 211's in order to maintain the warranty, but don't specify an oil change on the 212 due to improvements in oil technology.

A good independent should do it for £160ish, so it's a worthwhile investment.

Enjoy the car wink

You're welcome.

I also owned a GT6 many, many years ago.
