Hi

I have a v good honda civic 1.6D that does a v nice 51 mpg and a bit less when having fun. I do a lot of miles and now they have put average speed cameras on the A9 i want something with cruise control oh and must be reliable so no french cars. Dont care about badges so what would you say was my best option

plan to buy from auction / private and budget is 3K ish

mazda 6 looks good but my last one got only 40mpg and would like a bit higher
dont think the mazda 3 has Cruise control
Ford mondeo? Not sure if I could put a lot of miles on one compared to the mazda but open to ideas
SKoda octavia. struggling to find one that is not a taxi
new honda civic seems a huge jump for the newer model

idea?

looking for a higher mpg as doing 30k per year and not auto as prefer to have control over the gears down twisty wet roads.

thanks for the reply though

Then get a manual. 47mpg not good enough in a car the size you want, for £3k? Good luck with that.

Be aware that most things have the potential to bite you in the ass (Diesel Mazda6 especially) so saving a few hundred quid a year on fuel is the least of your concerns in reality.

However - Go for a 1.9 PD sub 140hp engined estate from the VAG stable, they will do 50+ mpg all day long easily in any form. So thats an A4 Avant, Skoda Octavia, Seat variants. Buy one with a recent cambelt & water pump change, don't expect things like radio aerials, electric windows & central locking to work faultlessly or suspension components to last but the rest of it will be OK.

My wifes 2000 year 115 PD Tdi manual is returning 64mpg on her daily commute but the rest of it is a poor quality car imho

Hi re saab

Urban mpg 27.2 mpg CO2 emissions 204 g/km
Extra Urban mpg 47.9 mpg Annual Tax £285
Average mpg 37.2 mpg

37.2 mpg is 27% less than my civic so that is a huge amount more when doing 30k per year

thanks v v helpful and thanks for pointing me in the right direction. is there any Kia, hyundi cars worth considering as well or would you stick to just the ones mentioned?

Volvo of some description. Plenty to choose from, although manual makes choice a little more restrictive.

I don't think you'll be in budget for any of the modern Korean eco diesel offerings. I'd shy away from anything common rail by Ford/Mazda/VAG if you want reliable with miles. Toyota D4-D's are in budget, plenty about in Avensis form though they do have common rail engines with the occasional issue too.

You are also right on the cusp of DPF equipped cars - AVOID THEM

Ford mondeo?
thought you said no French cars? Since quite a few of the Mondeos use a PSA diesel, you might want to check which model you're considering.

My 2007 golf 1.9tdi has cruise, can easily achieve 55mpg on the motorway. I'm selling it very soon but I expect being in north london it will be a bit too far for you.

cruise always used to be an easy retrofit on vag cars. Just needed the stalk and a quick session on the diag tools. Is that still the case?

Be aware that cruise can have a negative impact on fuel use.

I dont understand the hate for french cars - our 2.0hdi has 150K miles on it and has been far more reliable than the audis I've owned.

VAG PD130s return good MPG and are damn near bullet proof.

I'm currently running an A6 PD130 which will return 50MPG+ on a run and never drops below 40MPG even around town. It's manual and has cruise control as well, so ticks all your boxes?

I'm selling it soon, just so you know. wink
