Ive been using my Focus ST225 (facelift) for my 60 mile daily commute for the past 12 months, as you can imagine the fuel bill isn't to pretty! I'm now at the point where enough is enough so I've made the decision to move on, the plan is to get a sensible/reliable daily so next year i can have some money saved so i can hopefully buy something RS4/C63 AMG /M3 shaped....i want to be the 21 year old with the V8

Cars I've looked at so far:
Fabia VRS - these seem to be cheap to get decent reliable power from while maintaining good MPG?
Cooper s - had a cooper as my first car and know how fun they can be
Civic type r - vtec is an itch i want to scratch..should i?
Caddy van 140 - not to sure why but i like the idea of owning one

Would love to hear opinions on the above options and also any others i should look at.

If you want to stay Ford, my Fiesta ST is managing about 38mpg on mainly motorway journeys, could be worth a look.
Alternatively, if it's a short-term shed, the Mondeo ST TDCi seems to get a lot of love, though they're getting on a bit now. Couple of 06 & 07s on Autotrader for about £7k.

Do you want to be the 21 year old with a v8 so you can brag to your mates at the local car park?

Old man tarring the young with the same brush.....I prefer to drive my cars opposed to sitting in a car park.

I assume the vRS is the Mk1 with the diesel? The Mk2 twin-charged petrol is pretty poor on the economy side.

If you fancy a VTEC, then it's probably the right time to do it before the turbos take over. A good CTR could be a good shout.

Yeah the Mk1, i notice you have the LE model have spotted a good one for sale with fairly low miles. A CTR would be perfect especially the EP3 not to sure on MPG with them though?

Punto Evo/Grande Punto Sporting T-Jet?

frugal engines, I do a fair bit of mway work and get 36-42 depending how I drive when I'm off of it. cheap to tax and insure, the Grande's can be had for about 3l. 5k gets you in a low mile, late Series 2 with better seats and more equipment.
And the reliability. Most likely someone will come along and say their shyte and break down all the time but in the 8k/6 months I've had mine, only dealer incompetence has forced the car off of the road, so hardly a fault with the car.

The LE is Mrs Podie's daily driver - her second Mk1 Fabia vRS. It was bought new in 2007 and is now approaching 95k miles. It's been a great workhorse, and is certainly frugal. Good midrange punch and even if you hoof about it does 55mpg. Worth a look, but perhaps a bit sensible at 21? That said, they seem to hold their money well.

Not sure on the CTR's mpg, but being a Honda I imagine if you're sensible you'll see mid 30s?

I do about 10 ish miles to work everyday (go home for dinner) and its pretty good. I've never worked it out as i cant be arsed and i didn't buy it to be economical so just fill it up! but i believe it is pretty good in normal driving as you barely get above 4k rpm.... but its nice to let it sing when its warm smile

Less of the old please. Just seemed an odd thing to say "I want to be the 21 year old with a V8". It's the kind of thing someone who wants to show off says that's all.

Another Vote from me.

Ive got one and its great fun. I Average 38MPG in heavy traffic on 'Fuel log', 42-43 is the best Ive seen over a tank. No matter how hard I try yet to get below 35mpg even with multiple hoon's over a tank.

all from something the very respectable real world performance.

Andy

Edit to add, my commute is 17 miles in heavy stop start Motorway traffic to 30/40mph on a good day.

I averaged a gnats cock under 33mpg in my EP3, over a fairly similar commute to yours (70 miles/day) + usual driving around.

Best I ever had was about 38.5mpg, but that was over 300 miles purely on a motorway doing 70mph.

An odd thing to say would be "I don't want to be the 21 year old with a V8".

Not necessarily. Why did he have to mention his age? It's completely irrelevant, it's just saying "look at me, I want to have a v8 when I am 21".

All irrelevant if he's going to be "that 21 year old guy with the V8 that still lives with his parents".

Anyway BOT, I used to get about 32mpg out of my EP3.

Zetec s Fiesta TDCI, Mrss400 uses ours for her daily commute up in to deepest darkest Longcliffe in Derbyshire and its returning 58-60mpg on the screen.

Ive just driven it to York and back, motorway mainly but sat at 75/80 and its saying 62 mpg when we got back today.

Or thou for poke id say the Skodas better, 130 brake opposed to the Fords 90 odd.

keep what you have and next year get want you want.
You don't really want to save money your just using it as an excuse to buy another car
