A work mate wanted my opinion on these (this car in particular)

Never having been in a small VW I have no idea what to tell him...

So, anyone had one, what are they like to live with, what breaks easily, rust issues? etc etc

1.0L's are oh my god slow, electric windows won't work, rusty roof panels, apart from that they are OK. Loads of room inside for what it is.

I had a 1l arosa as my first car. They're pretty much identical - same engine? It was hilariously slow but a pretty good car all in all. Perfectly adequate for town driving & country lanes but horrible on faster A roads & motorways

Good point, the Arosa's appear not to suffer rusty roofs & they are usually a better spec too

Mine took some abuse but presented no problems at all, we had it in the family from new for a good 8 or 9 years and we spent nothing on it aside from servicing, fuel & tyres.

Part exchanged mine at 70k for about £800 iirc. THat was about 3 years ago so they should be available cheaper

A friend of mine had a 1.4 version which was really quite sprightly. He had it from when we were at school together twelve years ago and kept it for ten years before swapping it for a Renaultsport Clio a couple of years ago. If your friend wants to carry other people or any weighty luggage or go on faster roads than those around town it might be worth looking for a 1.4.

Lupos are great. We had a 1.0 for our daughter few yrs back but other poster is right - not quick. We later had a 1.4 sport and that was quite nippy - used to runit up to Edinburgh and back round trip of 500 miles and got 45 mpg smile

Why didn't your workmate type 'Lupo 1.0 test' into Google, rather than relying on the advice of someone who knows as little about one as he does?!!!

Maybe he thought people on a car forum might be a little more helpful and unbiased than someone who wrote an 'off the shelf' aimed at gullible car magazine buying types....

A few years ago I bought a 1.0 Arosa as a cheap way of getting to work. It's so slow though - to keep up with traffic on a fast dual carriage way it needs working very hard, and only gave about 35mpg. I'd certainly look for a 1.4 rather than the 1.0.

One plus point is that the boot lid is almost verticle, so it's so easy to park. I've never known anything that can be slotted in to tiny parking spaces like that. I've never owned a smart car though.

Personally, i'd rather look for something in the next class up, Fiesta or similar.

My missus has got a 1.4 Arosa, great little car - no problems have come up in the two years she's owned it so far, although hers has only done 22,000 miles!

Would definitely recommend the 1.4 over the 1.0, other than that, they're decent little cars.

I also had an Arosa 1.0 as my first car. Bare bones basic, but sufficient for A-to-B town motoring.
