The new rules are that any car that changes owners will now need to be taxed/licenced before the new owner can drive it. Tax is not transferable anymore when a car is sold.

Although you and your dad drive your car, you only pay once to tax it. If he were to buy it from you, he would need to tax it to drive it, as the DVLA would refund you any remaining full months once they receive notification of a change of owner.

HTH.

OP - ignore the p*ss-takers, this is PH after all. Next time you go to the petrol station, fill the tank and when you pay give them twice the amount. Your dad need to do this as well and then you're both covered for a year.

No, your car is taxed. So long as he's covered insurance wise, that's it.

That changes things somewhat. He just needs to swap the plates over.

You know, piss taking aside, I'd rather go with this tax plan than the one we have. I cant drive two cars at once, so I dont like paying for them when they're not being used. A price per mile regardless of vehicle would be interesting.

Brilliant I have saved that for my own future use, I just see there being so many opportunities to put that to good use.

Fairly used in this instance too imo.

It's been looked at many times. The systems to track have also been trialled. No real technology barriers, only political.

A labour govt with a massive majority backed off from doing it though arguably it is the right thing to do for the environment, etc

But you do end up disenfranchising lots of people; i.e. those that live in the country and have to commute or travel long distances for basic services. It becomes a disproportionate tax for some. It's a complex argument.

I'd also advise swapping the VIN plates aswell, just to be on the safe side.
