Whenever I have bought new tyres previously, it has always been due to the old one being shot. The garage disposing of them is part of the service/price.

However, I am now in the position of buying tyres to replace perfectly good ones. My recent Scooby came with 4 brand new budget tyres – literally fitted the day before for the MoT (2 weeks ago). I also have a Focus with newish tyres, 3 budget and one Continental Sport Contact. I wish to replace all 8 with winter tyres. I don’t want to keep hold of the tyres but they have to be worth something? The budget ones in the Scooby haven’t even scrubbed in yet and must have cost at least £60 a corner (I can’t find any cheaper online in the same size).

So what do people normally do - Offer the tyres to the fitter and negotiate a price? Just leave them with the fitter and write the cost off? Take them with me and try to sell privately?

I stuck a pair of half worn Pirelli P6000 tyres on eBay with a 99p starting price. In that size they were about £50 new and someone actually bid me £30 each for them and came and took them away, I was amazed. There is an eijit on eBay for every piece of st you want to get rid of, so list away.

Used tyres can be sold on ebay quite easily and it's certainly worth the effort, especially with 8 tyres. From recent experience it's best to set a fixed price auction (one per tyre) with offers invited (can't remember the exact ebay terminology). Number the tyres with some chalk so you don't mix them up/confuse yourself and take good photos of the tread and sidewall showing the tyre size. Offer a courier service to attract more interest and add this price to the auction (plus a margin if you're feeling greedy). This sounds like a real ballache but it's actually very easy, I have used Paisley Freight before without any problems. To 'package' the tyre up, all you need to do is tape the consignment note to the tyre.

If you offer them to the tyre fitter he'll probably give you £10 for the lot and sell them on ebay himself...

I've found it cheaper to put winters on ebay wheels, or buy second hand winters already on wheels, then keep the old original ones for the summer. If you really dont want to do that, just ask for the tyres back, it'll save you a disposal fee of a few quid per tyre and ebay what you dont want

I have no interest in keeping the tyres - I'd be swapping them regardless (either summer or winter tyres). They haven't cost me anything as they came with the cars, just seems a reasonable chunk of potential money being thrown away if I gift them to the tyre fitter.
