Apologies because there have been a few of these threads recently, but i would really appreciate some advice.

I would like to change my wifes bmw 120d (2005 model year) for a petrol-engined car. It has to be automatic (and a proper torque-converter at that, no DSG). Also, not direct injected (eg FSI etc). Basically, i want proven technology ina reliable, comfortable, affordable package. I estimate I have a budget of £6000. A petrol 1 series might be an option, but I personally generally dislike german stuff as I find it to be full of crap that causes more problems than it solves.

What sensible suggestions have you guys got? This will be a car used for commuting at NSL for 15 miles, so needs a bit of poke but dosnt have to be a twin-turbo V12.

Suggest away!

Volvo C30. Unless 4 doors are a must. Stylish, nice to drive, petrol variants, proper Auto, generally well looked after, not German,. Just a thought.

Civic from 2005 would be my perfect choice for my wife (I have a 3-door civic "sport", 2005) but she claims they are "ugly".

My friend has an automatic one with all sorts od gadgets on it. He dosnt drive cars with mechanical sympathy in mind and his is surviving everything thrown at it.

Maybe I can find a way to tempt her
