speeding on Xmas day

Hey guys, new here and found the site after thinking about what happened on Xmas day and crapping myself.
Basically a friend came over from canada and we had nothing to do, she wanted to see something out of london so I suggested we just do a whistle stop tour of Brighton.
Driving to Brighton, the roads were virtually deserted bar a few cars, anyway, at one empty downhill stretch and probably a tail wind following I opened her up and probably went a tad over 120 mph for a short while, slowed her down a bit and looked in the rear view mirror and saw flashing blue lights in the distance.
I immediately realised that the police must have either been on a bridge or a slip road or something... dont know exactly where they must have been but I felt gutted.
Hit the brakes (they were still quite a distance away) and scooted into the left lane making sure I wasnt a tiny bit over the limit and followed a car that was in the lane.
A while later the car with its flashing lights came up to some distance behind me but and turned its lights off... I made a turning off onto a slip road and made my way to a service station and the police car followed but passed me by.
At the time I figured they let me off, no evidence etc... just got this feeling in the pit of my stomach now that something will come in the post because of that one moment of "idiocy" on a completely clear daylit empty road.

... I figured the same thing but guess just want to know if they ever ride up peoples asses, pass em by and then give a new years surprise in the mail ;(.Should be fine mate, keep an eye on the post, worst case scenario they have 14 days to issue you with a NIP, more if it is a company car (and I would guess a little more at this time of the year to allow for the post). Any more than 3 weeks and you should be home and dry.
Maybe time for a detector? If it was laser they used to clock you you would have time to slow down before the blues came on even if they'd already got a reading on you.

Just this nagging suspicion, I would think they let me off considering they turned the siren off and passed me by pretty slow when I went off a small roundabout into a service station off the slip road.

We had a similar situation on the M11 a couple of weeks ago (Mr Big was driving). Thankfully it was dark and we managed to 'lose' the police car in the traffic as we were in the Saab. I expect if we had been in the TVR then we might have got pulled.
We saw the blue lights and slowed down, pulling into the nearside lane where we blended in with all the other blue saloons. The police car went past and then turned off his lights. Either he had lost us or decided that our powers of observation were sufficient to not require a ticket. Also we were not doing much over the limit but it served as a useful reminder and gave me the opportunity to nag

Couple of points.
BiB told me once never to stop as you did, as it makes it easy for them. They don't like stopping on main roads unless they have to, and it's possible they'll get called to another job etc. In a similar vein, if you are stopped on a main road they'll often try to get you to pull into a layby - it's best to drive past it and stop at the side of the road, they'll not want to hang around too long.
2nd point is that if you do get a NIP, just say your Canadian friend was driving

Seems they weer making a point... what kind of detectors do they use anyway? do they take pictures of the drivers or have records and so forth?

I always thought x'mas day was the one day of the year when you got to top-speed-test your cars on the motorways at 2pm whilst everyone else watches the Queen?

Similair situation 25/12/03 A1,zero traffic, when going a tad over the NSL, a V70 Traffic car appears out of the slip road I had just passed, all lights going,I lifted off and cruised down to a lower 3 figure speed, plod caught up dropped the lights and floored it away. Made me pay more attention to the rear view mirror, but no NIP's etc. Maybe he had bigger fish to fry elsewhere?
On a slightly different note, i think I got had by a camera van, on Boxing day......as it was patrolling the new 50mph limit on the approach to the Severn Crossing tolls. I was doing about 65-70mph (having slowed from 90mph) when i spotted it on the bridge, and immediately my Origin B2 laser thingy went off......guess I might be lucky in that it could've been pointing and one of the other cars near me and picked up the 'scatter' or whatever. I think though that i might be getting something in the post next week! Oh well, first one for 4 years, so not bad I suppose! But Boxing day, for God's sake?!!

There's one consilation......if it's got you nearer to 90mph than 65mph....the buses nowadays are more comfortable then yesteryear...

We were up at 5.30 christmas morn, in to the Esprit & out for the drive of the year, Bristol to Bath, picking the best roads, back to Bristol, up to clifton & we saw 11 cars. i know its naughty doing triple figures on Whiteladies but hey... its the time to drive. No police, no pedestrians, no traffic jams. & to think most people were in bed at this glorious time....
