Found this little critter has taken up residence, had a mate with him too.

What type of newt are they? Smooth newt? I take it they are looking to hibernate under the shed?

I think this is a common newt. I used to have a big interest in newts but that was many years ago when I looked after the school pond!

I do remember the irony of them being called common, when they are not really.

Hope they have suitable shelter there smile

Yep, that's a smooth (AKA common) newt, and I think you've probably identified the sex correctly too - it's not the best photo, but that does look like a male (they tend to be slightly darker and more heavily marked on the head than the females, when out of breeding condition; in breeding condition they have a big crest and are heavily spotted).

To be fair, they are the most common of the UK newt species overall, thought there are some areas where great crested newts are more prevalent locally.

In the next few years when the UK's newts start dieing out in vast swathes, they will blame it on climate change - instead of irresponsible importers and exotic pet owners. I'm afraid it is an odds on certainty.

No, it's a baby komodo dragon.

Actually, nope, take that back, you're right, it's a newt.
