Just driven home and whist driving i wound down the passenger window in my 987.2 Cayman when i heard a wearing noise and a cable came up between the door card and the glass. Not sure what has gone wrong. grateful for any help / advise.

Bear in mind the inner door panel is a sealed part; and until it's removed you wont know if you need a new one (the sealing strip fails and the outer panel clips are so strong they can deform the inner panel before releasing) the end result will be a water leak and repeat work if it isn't looked at

Swindon til 12pm on Saturday
Reading til 2pm on Saturday; probably the same ish across the network?

On OE ones the cables corrode; fray and snap - same design since Boxster in 1996 and a fact of life being in a wet area in our climate (roadsalt works its way in over the years also). Sometimes the channels harden and raise the effort required to move the glass which stresses the cable - as does the comfort drop function when the car is iced up....

Pull the cable up and see the condition. If it hasn't snapped then it has popped off the runner (this usually happens if the genuine reg has been replaced with a cheap one without correct sized guides and weak springs) I don't like fitting the non-genuine ones as they have a 50% failure rate IME.....

The cable rusts and eventually snaps. I had mine done at my local indy so see no reason to go OPC, and no they don't work weekends. It's not beyond a DIY job, but quite tricky to set up so I've been told.

As has been said above fit a genuine regulator. I fitted a customer supplied cheep one about twelve months ago. It lasted two months before it went again. He then got me to supply and fit a genuine one. I also fitted a new door membrane/seal at the same time. It's been ok ever since.

Without doubt the regulator.
Check on You tube there is some quite informative instructions on how to replace.
I've done one on my Turbo. Very common issue.

The motor and regulator are two seperate components.

Apologies for the delayed reply! 2hrs to include replacing the door aggregate (german translation for inner door panel!) and adjusting the window for windnoise and waterleaks.

cheers Pope, much appreciated. another Q are the motors easy to replace in the window regulator? my window sounds noisy when going up/down, would be good to have it near silent like the other window

Are you sure the noise you can hear is the motor and not just a dry seal?
