Well I Never.......
Discussion
Today I went from Birmingham to Cheshire and back, which involved a total of about 120 miles of extremely busy M6, including a good few miles of 50 limited roadworks and other slowdowns due to the volume of traffic. Yet in all that time I didn't see a single instance of bad driving; without exception everyone drove sensibly and couteously and kept (more or less) to the limits. Yes no cutting up, tailgating, lane hogging, elephant racing or mad lunges across three lanes for an exit slip road. In fact it was as relaxing as Motorway driving can be.
My only possible explanation is that it was a Saturday. No doubt the Sunday Afternoon Motorists were still stocking up on their incontinence pads and Werthers Originals, and no-one else seemed to be hurrying to some completely pointless meeting or other or sweeping everyone else aside in a pathetic rush to attempt to sell enough paper clips, or more likely IT training packages, so that next time round they will have 'earned' the miserable 4-pot diesel with 19" wheels instead of 18s.
Your thoughts on my theory are of course more than welcome. Unfortunately I can't make every day a Saturday in November, but perhaps disallowing tax relief to employers for travel during working time might help make our roads almost as relaxing.

Well done, you've stumbled across 'the norm'. We don't often hear about 'the norm' because, well, it's normal.
Having said that, just the other day the Telegraph did report that there isn't a war going on in Switzerland, and Milton Keynes isn't suffering from famine.
To be honest, I'm surprised more people don't demand to read these sorts of newsworthy items.

I experienced much the same thing on a trip between Cardiff and Blackpool for a family party a few weeks ago (oddly enough, also on a Saturday). The return trip on Sunday was a bit more fraught but the only old codger in view was the old man snoring away in the back of the car when I looked in the rear view mirror.
The main offenders were as usual the German diesel pilots, presumably getting in an early start. Those photocopiers don't sell themselves I suppose.
