cheapest dSLR?
Discussion
Hi,
what is the cheapest dSLR on the market currently? I'm thinking (only thinking mind) of upgrading my camera again (I've used a Canon A70 fairly successfully for a year) in the sales but don't have loads of cash to throw about (severly limited in the funds department). I don't want a HP deal either.
So whats the cheapest deal available, either new or second hand (i.e. what are the older cameras that are still decent but are now, well, old)?
Cheers!

I'm trying very hard to keep myself out of all debt if I can. Plus, I don't see spending £500 over x months any different to spending £500 now - I'm a pay cash person.
In all reality, I can't justify spending that sort of cash on what will ultimately be a toy for me hence wanting to get something older, probably 2nd hand now

Keep an eye on 7dayshop.com and warehouseexpress.com - when the prices get to the level that you can justify, print the page out and take it in to Jessops - they should price match it.
Canon 300D is the cheapest, but IMHO its a false economy just going for the cheapest, as you'll just need to replace it sooner. Look at the features of all of them and get the one that best fits your needs.

Ah, but you see the D60 is way, way, way out of my league. I could justify picking up a dSLR with lens for aropund £300, hence my problem.
I might do to a halfway house later this year as I really can't pay half my student loan on a toy (even if my Canon is starting to show itself up a little now)

I'd say that if you can't stretch to what you really want, don't put up with a compromise if you don't have to. Wait, and as your savings go up, prices will come down. When they meet, that's the time to buy. Peasy!
Makes most sense. It's not like your talking 3-5 years here. The prices move down quickly on this kind of stuff. If you wait, I believe you could be in dSLR world before next christmas. If you go used, then before the end of the summer! Why blow what you have on something you don't want?

what sort of size is the LCD on dSLR's? I tend to find that pictures I think are terrible on the Canon, come out fairly well on the PC, and the inverse is also true. I'm guessing the camera's have built in algortihms to test the "quality" of the picture (hence the whole hotspot thing)?

I get that too - shots that are totally out of focus appear to be fine on the LCD then you get them onto the PC and are disappointed.
Another reason I'm upgrading!

Not sure about the others, but the LCD on the D70 is very good and enables you to zoom right in at various ratios and really have a good look.
It's good, but no substitute for a full size monitor - shots that look sharp on the back may not be when you see them properly. I find it useful for gauging exposure but wouldn't trust it for pinpoint focus.
Much more useful than the back of a film camera though

I'm keeping an eye on ebay for eos D30s as they have all the features of my eos1000 film camera but don't have huge resolution (but i'm quite happy with 2mp).
You should be over the moon with the 3Mp or so you'll get then
Truly great camera. Little slow on autofocus especially in low light, but you can get some cracking shots with this body.
