Key fob is rubbish!

My key fob has never been much cop but after coming off of holiday for a week it seems worse. You can press it until yours heart's content at almost anywhere on the car and it won't lock.
The only place it seems to work is just through the driver's window.
Is there a knack of doing this or are they just crap?
Why can't they work like my missus' Golf where you can lock it from half way down the road? after all I did pay 4 times the money for my car.

Is it easy to get into the little blighters to change battery? I forgot to mention, both of the fobs are crap, but the battery could be duff on both especially in this cold snap.

Just replaced the batteries in mine. Works a treat now.
Be careful to remember how it comes apart...
There seems to be bugger all logic in the arrangement of the guts of the nasty little device.
I have seen more sophisticated and better made articles fall out of Christmas crackers.

Rumour has it that the TVR fobs work far worse than the standard Meta ones - that's certainly true when I compare it to fitted to my bike!

Just ordered 4. Hopefully it will sort it out as one of my fobs has stopped working altogether and the other is not brilliant.

Steve, as your car is the same year as mine I am assuming you have the same alarm system (TVR Meta, small black fob with TVR logo on button) if so you are not alone!
Sometimes mine is fine the rest of the time it is total tosh, I asked a few questions as my old Chimaera had the Foxguard system on (rectangular fob with two thin buttons) and this was brilliant and apparently the Meta systems are a bit hit and miss, even since I replaced the batteries!

Spend the money your granny sent you at christmas, bin the crap Meta system and get a proper alarm fitted, I had a Cifford jobbie with remote starting fitted, It's worth the money just to be able to start it when small boys have their noses pressed to the windows

Yes you're right, it is the meta system. I'll try new batteries first. What makes me think it is the batteries is, it has never been as bad as it is now.
The weird thing is it seems to unlock OK but locking it is another matter.

Why not try the trick that the nobber from Top Gear (Clarkson) does.Place the key fob next to your temple open your mouth press the button and lock/unlock the car from 1/4 of a mile away

Hmmm...not at all sure about this remote starting melarky. See a certain indie service manager was telling me a tale as to how his crew had the bejasus frightened out of them recently when some posh alarm went off unexpectedly on a Cerbie that was up in the air having something done to the fuel system... wrench plips the plipper to dis-arm, engine remote starts on elevated car, high-pressure fuel sprays everywhere (including on the wrench below), luckily car not in gear. Seriously the guy was still shaking and pale when he was telling me about it an hour or so later 
Know what you mean. I have a novel solution to this problem: I never, ever lock the car. My rationale is as follows:
1) I never leave anything valuable in the car.
2) If someone wants to break into it, they they can easily do it even if it's locked - the car has a soft top.
3) I'd rather a thief not break into the car by destroying it - so the doors will always be open.
4) The immobiliser is pretty damned effective, so they could't hot wire it.
All in all, it's my cosidered opinion that it's best left unlocked!
