Evening Everyone!

Recently changed jobs which means I now only have a 15 mile round trip to work, which is 80 percent motorway.

Currently have a seat ibiza 1.4 (exciting i know) as a daily driver, and a 1992 Toyota Mr2 as a bit of fun.

So got me thinking, if i sell them both, leaving me around £3k to spend on a new car, I wouldnt mind buying something a little different or maybe a useable classic.

Had a look at a Porsche 944 but insurance is too high (only 20)

Anyone any suggestions?

Requirements

Good looking or cool
A bit of speed or feel quick, or at least sound good

Thats it biggrin

Thanks everyone

I'd be looking at a hot hatch - Mk2 Golf GTI or 205 GTi. Old school cool, nippy enough to be entertaining, decent parts availability and good reliability so relatively cheap to run.

The crucial thing is to buy a good'un in the first place.

Or a Mk1 MX5, natch.

E36 M3 could be a lot of fun... If insurance is a bit steep, then how about an Accord Type R, Corrado VR6 or MK1 Golf?

I just sold this for a bit under 2k and for the money I think its a bit of a bargain. Throughout the time I had it , it has never let me down ,did an average of 26mpg which is not bad for a 2.8 and it sounded pretty good with a Remus exhaust . Never mind the folk that says its a hairdressers car as long as you enjoy it just give them the finger : )
Also you can insure these on a classic car insurance, I was paying 180 quid a year.

MG ZT.

Retro styling? Check.
Modern enough to have some decent toys and creature comforts? Check.
Sporty and a fun drive? Check.
Big enough for four adults and their luggage? Check. (More so if you go for the tourer.)

You'll get a good one for well under 3 grand.

Echoing the bmw theme, I'd say an E36 328i. Great cars, brilliant engines, lovely noise, great fun to hoon around, and comfortable when you just want an easy journey.

I wanted an old school BMW, so I bought this for £900.

E39 523i Touring.

I had this when I was 21-23. It is all of the car that you'll ever need if you can handle the fuel consumption. It did around 20-25mpg depending on usage and cost about £450 for me to insure on a normal, 15000 miles/year fully comprehensive policy.

Actually my current car may also be up your street. Only a 520i and nowhere near as polished a performer as the Jag but still a lovely old car to waft around in.

This thread is going in a typically PH bargey direction which is odd considering the OP has only mentioned the 944.

I love my BMW E34 as well but a 944 it ain't.

I imagine you could find a ratty 323i for 3k, but perhaps a 316i or 318i would be more acheivable... with the added bonus that late 318i got Bosch fuel injection.

But why would you want a pile of s**t 3 series when you could get so much more for £3k????

Not very helpful to the OP, Beer Man- are you going to suggest something or are you just going to snipe at other people's suggestions?

Utterly hideous pile of unreliable cack with extremely naff 'm' badge in a crap location. And there was some mug c**t willing to pay nearly £2k for that? bks.

Well I suppose that answers that question. There's a definate pattern forming with this new 'Beer Man' chap, based on his posts elsewhere...

if it was me I would keep the Ibiza as a daily plonker, sell the MR2 and then save up some decent money.
At the £3k mark you are only going to get troublesome junk in the type of car you are looking for.

How eloquently put, I assume you drink most of your profits?
