I've got a BMW diesel and like all diesels, it includes and EGR valve to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
Unfortunately, these valves also gunk up over time and get jammed requiring a clean or worst case replacement. My one has started gunking up and that also means a lot of crap going inside the combustion chamber so I'm considering having it removed altogether.
There's a lot of pro's with regards to removing it including improved MPG, improved engine wear, better overall performance and in a lot of cases less smoke (my diesel is yet to do this mind but I change the oil every 10k miles regardless of what the trip computer tells me).
So the question is, what are the disadvantages apart from a tiny increase in NOx emissions? These aren't even checked in emission controls so can't really be a problem.
