One of my pals has a mercedes. He had two new tyres fitted last week By a Merc dealer and over the weekend one of them started going down.

He took it back in today and they have charged his for a whole new tyre saying that a nail has gone through his "at an angle". Conveniently they provided him with this video.

Now that looks perfectly repairable to me?

Any thoughts?

He's now been relieved of another £170odd quid after having just spent £700odd on a service and two new rears . I have Told him to call the dealer and ask for the damaged tyre back, which he has done.

I'm no expert but I've had several tyres repaired with what appears to be similar screws embedded in them. Hard to tell, but is that really at such an angle?

Easily repairable for sure.

OMG, an ANGLE!

So it's either perpendicular, checked with a protractor, or no repair hehe

Maybe it's a problem if it's really steep, for those pull through bungs, but for a patch inside that wouldn't be an issue at all.

I had a tyre that no one would fix as it had the nail right on the 'limit' line, but I patched it DIY and it was absolutely fine. I even checked the patch when I swapped the tyres a year later and it looked like the day it was done.

Tyre people are just trying to sell you a tyre. Dealers more so. The mark-up for the effort is probably the best thing they do.

Looks like a tax on the lazy.

Two minutes to run your hand round the tyre and find out for yourself and £15 for a repair or throw the keys to a main dealer to fix. If you've got the money it's certainly easier.

It's easily repairable BTW

This gets better. My mate has asked for the tyre back as I suggested following my outrage when he sent me the video and they have now said that they "have stripped the tyre down and in fact it hasn't gone in at a a angle and is repairable".

He is now driving around on a new tyre he paid for.

Not heard on a refund as yet but my thoughts are they should just refund his card and call it quits.

Yes, he is having his pants pulled down. I can see why you would take a car to a main dealer for servicing etc to get a stamp in the book and keep any lease companies happy but tyres? There are loads of independent tyre shops who would patch that easily and at a fair rate due to competition. Even Costco does it for a tenner now.

I would suggest he speaks to the dealer principal, explains the issue & asks what they intend to do about it as due to lack of proper examination by their mechanic he has paid for a new tyre which wasn't actually necessary.

Would a MB main dealer be in the business of repairing tyres, rather than just fitting new ones? As has been said already if you wanted a specialised tyre service you'd be better off taking it to a specialised tyre fitter.

Whoah there!... it's hardly a specialist tyre service he's asking for. It's a simple tyre repair for crying out loud. The kind of thing they normally get the garage apprentice to do....it;s hardly fking rocket science

Why would a MB main dealer be in the business of looking after a customer's car, rather than flushing his wallet out? As has been said already, if you wanted not to be treated as a walking cash machine then you'd be better off taking it pretty much anywhere else.

Very interesting!

I took my C250 in for a service a few weeks ago and had exactly the same phone call about a front tyre. I told them to leave it and let me check it.

I haven't even been able to find the screw on looking around, I need to take the wheel off to have a good look. But so far it hasn't lost any pressure whatsoever.

Mine was at Maidstone Merc.

A main dealer is never going to do a tyre repair, it is straight off and on with new parts, would be amazed if the job wasn't sub'd out to a mobile tyre fitter in the first place.

They did this to my parents the other week.

Unfortunately by the time they told me what had happened i wasn't able to stop them from doing it, and Mercedes had disposed of the brand new tyre which they had put on (less than a week old). So quite simply we have nothing to stand on to go back to them over.

My parents are both retired, run an older Mercedes (purchased out right when they both worked), and no longer have a lot of money, and simply "trust" the dealership to advise them and help them.

I can not explain my hatred of dealerships sometimes.

This was the main dealership in Southampton out by the airport.

is this a normal thing for dealers to now being doing? taking videos of things they want to replace ?

If this is not the new norm, then perhaps this dealer has become fairly accustom to pulling people's pants down and has started taking videos to try and deal with the numerous complaints they get
