For those of you on the Wickham/Winchester run this morning here is an update on the wife and daughters shopping trip to Bluewater today. We live in Locksheath just to the west of Fareham and they left at 9.00am to go up the M3 then the M25 towards Dartford where you pick up signs for Bluewater, simple. After basically going left at the top of the M3 towards Heathrow (despite my written instructions to follow the Gatwick signs NOT HEATHROW in capitals and underlined), turning round and then somehow going down the M23 towards Brighton (despite Gatwick only being mentioned once at the start and instructions to head for Dartford once on the M25 my daughter told me this is why they headed down the M23) they managed to turn round and end up near Dartford, where they inexplicably then headed back south on the M25. They pulled into Clackett Lane Services on the wrong side and rang me for about the 5th time. By now there was apparently a bad accident near Dartford causing long tailbacks. Undaunted they headed to the next exit off the M25, turned round and headed back. Amazingly they reached Bluewater at 1.30pm, a mere 4 and a half hours after leaving, including a food stop. Shopping seems to have gone well. Now I'm not sure what time they left but I have just spoken to my daughter at approximately 6.50pm who informs me they are now heading BACK towards Dartford having once again had a trip back down the M23. Nevertheless they sounded in good spirits and I could even hear my wife laughing in the background, something I can no longer make her do. I will keep you posted on their progress. (or lack of)

7.15pm and my daughter has just rung a bit panicky to say that my wife has decided to come off the M25 and head down the A3 because she saw a sign saying Portsmouth! I think its getting dangerous now she seems to be trying to think for herself. Shall I put the kettle on yet or is it too early?

8.05pm, they have reached Portsmouth, kettle is now going on in preparation for a nice cup of tea and a warm and embracing hug for our 2 intrepid explorers.

ha ha ha! Thanks for the report as promised Mick.

It was excellent hearing your updates on the day. Everytime your phone rang we were all waiting to hear where they had got to.

Perhaps buy them a road map each for next Xmas

Need to do that for my mum. She quite honestly in all seriousness does not know "left" from "right".

This sounds scarily like my mother. She has never driven on her own from her house near Wickham to our previous house in Andover. However, when we took her to our new house in Guildford she say she'll come and see us more often, becasue "it's easier to get to."

Her broad logic is that once she reaches Winchester (the limit of her area knowledge) then it is easier as she just stays on the A31, rather than having to use the A34 and work out how to take the A303 westbound for Andover. Huge green signs with A303 Andover have never managed to do the trick.
