I'm having an extension built at home which will incorporate a modest 5.1 surround system.

I'm having speaker cables for ceiling speakers installed as part of the build.

I'm unsure where I want to put the subwoofer in the room, so don't want to commit to having a subwoofwer cable installed.

I haven't bought a receiver yet - but am intending to go for a budget Yamaha receiver, RXV475 or similar which doesn't have any inbuilt Bluetooth or Wifi functionality.

What I'd like to do would be to drive the subwoofer wirelessly. Looking around I see that Bluetooth subwoofers seem to be the norm for soundbar systems but I can't find any standalone ones.

Ideally I'd like to be able to buy some kind of accessory that will enable me to choose whatever subwoofwer I like and connect it wirelessly to my basic AV amp. Does such a thing exist and if so are they any good ?

The simple solution I do for installs is to run ordinary (sat quality) coax to two or three locations in a room. Subwoofer signals work perfectly well over these cables and are a good cheap way to keep flexibility.

Alternatively there are a couple of manufacturers that offer wireless subs, the ones I have used in the past have been from Polk Audio but the have changed distributor recently so I need to do some digging to find out where they have gone.

One of these will do the trick assuming your AVR is in the same or next room. Velodyne's WiConnect. Place your sub anywhere you have power.

Thanks - that's exactly the sort of thing I wanted - but the UK distributor only sells the wireless subwoofers, not the transmitter/reciever.

I've seen traces of the Polk product VEX refers to on various websites but no-one has stock. Saw one on Ebay in the US but 110v/60hz so no good.

I thought this would be a common requirement and there would be a mainstream product available - apparently not.

I think getting my builder to run a few metres of coax from where teh amp will be going to a backbox/coax faceplate at each of the 2 or 3 potential SW locations before the room gets plasterboarded, as VEX suggests, is going to be the cheapest and most effective solution.

Many thanks both of you for your replies.
