Advice on brake discs and Porsche Warranty
Discussion
Recently bought a 2008 Cayman S which is absolutely brilliant. Previous owner had the extended Porsche warranty which has already proved useful. He also recently changes all 4 brake pads but not the discs. The front ones are lipped and probably need replacing soon. Question is, if I go outside the OPC world and get a specialist to do it (rather cheaper I suspect) will I have a warranty problem? The local OPC has already noted the problem so I am worried that getting a specialist to do it will be obvious when I next get the car serviced (probably in January) by the OPC.
Personally I won't be buying brake parts from an OPC a much better deal can be had from motor factors, plus the discs are really easy to replace even if you only have basic mechanical skills.
Shop around and save a good bit of cash.
As for the warranty...brakes are consumable parts so are not covered, the OPC really has no say in the matter.

Thanks - that is very useful. Out of interest, how much do you reckon is right for front discs only?Shop around and save a good bit of cash.

My understanding is that Porsche discs are made by tartar and do not have a porsche part number on them so they will never know.
I know I have never used porsche to replace my discs and hands and have had no problems with warranty work or renewals

Euro stock Sebro disks (original manufacturer for Porsche) Pagid disks (great quality and a little less expensive than Sebro) and both Textar (original manufacturer for Porsche) and Pagid pads. Not sure if their prices are better than the ones linked above, but worth a look.

For all the OPC knows you took it to another OPC to get them done while you were away on business. They won't interrogate the history to that extent, and Porsche will only care that it's genuine parts w.r.t maintaining the extended warranty.
I made the "mistake" of letting my OPC replace all four discs and pads on my 08 Cayman S when they decreed it necessary to replace them to qualify for the extended warranty, at some considerable expense. My car had only done 16k miles at the time so it felt especially galling.
No one else to blame but myself though for not asking the question you have just asked before parting with my cash

it would be OK as far as the existing warranty was concerned, unless some failure could be linked to the discs (Unlikely) but it is worth noting they would fail a 111 check if you chose to renew the warranty at the end of its current term.
It is fairly easy to tell genuine discs as although you are correctly informed they are often not stamped with a part number they are imprinted with a kite symbol.
Hope thats useful.

Thanks. That is an issue as I want to renew the warranty next April. Maybe it does need to go to the OPC after all. It is fairly easy to tell genuine discs as although you are correctly informed they are often not stamped with a part number they are imprinted with a kite symbol.
