The best experience I've ever had with the police tonight, not that I've had that many ! I admittedly took too much of chance at traffic lights and was pulled for going over as the light had gone red.

Understandably they then checked my car and licence. I have no points but they could not find my insurance on the MIB database. I was convinced it was insured and called home, but alas my wife could find nothing other than a renewal notice that showed expiry in August. To my horror, I was in the back of a police car and had been driving an uninsured car. I am normally meticulous in my 'admin' but I'd clearly made a mistake and put my hands up...

The response ! One of the officers offered to drive my car home, in case it got damaged being left where it was. I jumped in with him, we drove 10 miles with the traffic car following, he dropped me off, the kids came out, he offered them a go in the car with the lights and siren, which they took up. I thanked them for being so understanding and off they went after telling me to drop into the local station for a chat anytime..

My view of the police, while not at all bad before, just improved massively. Very releived and a lesson to me to double check all of the car admin ! BTW, there main role was drugs, i.e. disrupting the low life that deal - fair play to them.

So your car was uninsured then?

Was any official action taken by the Police to deal with this state of affairs over and above driving your uninsured vehicle home?

You don't have to be in the police to check the MID.

Have you been 'done' then or not? Or just been 'done' in a nice way?

Possibly if OP had been insuring with DD, then the renewal notice would have mentioned that in the event of insured not cancelling, then the policy would auto renew and payments would be taken as normal. On the Askmid front, I renewed the day before mine ran out and checked Askmid to find mine was not on ,the day after it would have expired. Insurers are pretty quick to take you off, but it can take up to seven days to put you back on .

I'd have had your car crushed. No excuse for no insurance.

(says the bloke that has over the past few years paid premiums as high as £2K in order to insure his kids)

So you got away with driving through a red light and driving with no insurance.

How big are your tits?

Did you get the name/number of the officer?
I'd like to report someone for simply not doing their job properly. No insurance, no excuse, should have been immediately ceased.

Ceased? As in ended?
Would you have said the same if it was you in that position? Doubt it.

Jesus fking Christ. Assuming the OP's post is 100% correct (and I have no reason to believe that it isn't) why the hell for once can't it be taken at face value and viewed as the police took a common sense approach to a person with no previous convictions and decided it was a genuine oversight!

Yes he broke the law

Yes he would be buggered if he had had an accident

Yes he's probably learned the lesson without the need for points/increased insurance costs etc etc

Plus we've all saved by not paying for the BIB to fill in all the bloody paperwork thumbup

Incredulous and jealous in equal measures here

Due to a fk up at Harvey Keitel's favourite insurer I was pulled by ANPR a little while after they unilaterally (and without communication) canned my cover

The crew were polite and understanding but the fine and 6 points were something I had no quibble with

You need to buy a lottery ticket tonight if this story is true

Funny that i was watching a 4 year old version of traffic cops last night and to avoid a parking fine, the passenger nipped in and drove it round the block, no harm caused but he got £560 and 6 points.

What's the difference ? I thought the prosecution would be for 'potential' in this case ?? The above case was "Well you 'may' have been involved in an accident and been uninsured".

I suppose the BIB may be investigated and potentially sacked if his boss see's this, Was it an absolute case of no insurance like being pregnant, You either are or aren't.

If were in Malta, your car would almost certainly have been crushed for no insurance, even if it was a brand new model, irrespective of value.

You even have to go to the Licencing building in Valletta to pick your number plates up, which THEY make for you.

On the other hand the MOT's (VRT) are only every TWO years and your car will usually pass if it has a steering wheel, four wheels and an exhaust pipe.......biggrin

At least that was the case several years ago........
